"Where on earth have you been?"

Kaito groaned and tried to pull the covers over his head. There was a very angry Brit who had annoyingly switched on a light and had bellowed in loud English. All of it was enough to make the headache the Japanese boy had worse, making him feel sick to his stomach. He didn't even bother to hide it. He was in pain and Hakuba. Was. Not. Helping.

Apparently his not-quite-verbal answer was enough for the detective to realize that he needed to change his approach. First, and thankfully, the light was put out and Kaito was able to relax again, not feeling as nauseous as he had before. Next, Hakuba moved around in the dark until he sat on the edge of the bed, lowering his voice to a murmur as he somehow managed to get his hand beneath the blankets and onto Kaito's forehead, asking in the other boy's native tongue, "Migraine?"

"Dunno," said Kaito, voice sounding shaky and weak to his own ears. "Just 'urts."

The larger teenager went quiet for a moment. "Where exactly? Head? Stomach?"

Somehow, the magician managed to give a laugh. "Think m'head makes m'stomach hurt," he said, closing his eyes tightly shut as his temples throbbed painfully as the detectives hand went from his forehead to feel along his jaw with surprisingly gentle fingertips.

"Well, your throat is swollen," announced Hakuba with a clinical air, "and I would not be surprised if you had a fairly high temperature."

Kaito couldn't quite hold back the moan. "I'm sick?" he asked in what could have been incredulity but came out with less strength than he'd hoped. "Figures. Come to visit a foreign country and I get sick--"

"After disappearing for three days," stated the other boy whose eyes Kaito could feel even through the blankets. "Kuroba, where on earth have you been?"

Kaito remained silent, not knowing how even to begin to explain things, especially with how sick he was.

Hakuba didn't appreciate his silence, however, and removed his hand before leaning forward on the bed and beginning sharply, "Kuroba--"

Without warning, sharp pain shot up his arm, making the magician jerk away, an almost silent hiss escaping his lips as he bit back the cry that had actually gotten stuck in his throat. Appropriately alarmed, Hakuba lifted his hands up, palms out in an almost surrendering gesture as he stared down at his classmate.

At length, Hakuba quietly said, "You're injured."

Kaito gritted his teeth, shifting under his blankets in order to put his other hand over its wounded opposite. "It's nothing," he whispered back harshly.

That got a raised eyebrow from the Brit. "Oh? Then kindly explain why you're exhibiting the behavior of a wounded animal." When the other teenager said nothing in return, Hakuba then lowered his hands, putting one of them on the magician's covered shoulder. "If you tell me what is wrong, I will not ask any more about where you were and what happened."

A part of Kaito felt as if there was some sort of trick to it. Logically, he knew that Hakuba was hardly the kind of person to set up traps of that nature. However, whether it was because of the fever the blond said he had or some psychological issue that had become prominent because of his captivity, he still felt the need to lie and act his way out of the spotlight, to pretend there was nothing wrong.

Before he could say anything--honest or not--Hakuba took hold of the blankets and jerked them away.
