Hakuba was staring at him.
Kaito frowned. "What?"
The British detective carefully lowered his cup and finally spoke, "Kuroba. Tell me you want a cup of coffee."
"What?" asked Kaito again, wondering if the other boy had finally lost his mind. "Why?"
"Just do it," said Hakuba with some exasperation.
Still confused about the purpose of this, the magician carefully said, "I want a cup of coffee."
The blond nodded. "Good. Now in English."
Now frowning heavily, the Japanese boy slowly sounded out the words, "I want a cup of coffee?"
"Now in French."
Kaito furrowed his brow. "I don't know any of that in French!" he stated firmly, volume raising in annoyance.
Hakuba sighed. "That's what I was afraid of."
That made Kaito stop just short of wanting to strangle his classmate for being vague about everything. A chill ran through his body and he rubbed at his arm, trying to warm himself up in a way. "Afraid of?" he echoed, trying to make sense of the words.
The detective sat back in his seat, looking the magician in the eye as he explained, "The waitress understood your order."
Kaito paused. "So... she knows Japanese?" he asked cluelessly.
Hakuba shook his head, making Kaito's stomach sink. "If that were the case, I wouldn't have had to apologize when I accidentally said something in Japanese." Arms were crossed and a hand was placed on a chin. "Which means that the only way she would have understood you was only if you spoke French--and fluently. Which I somehow didn't catch..."
