"Dear me," said the empty portrait. "Another Potter so soon?"
"Er..." said Albus, not knowing how to respond. "Sorry?"
"Oh, no, dear boy, there's nothing to be sorry for. It is merely such a surprise that this is the case. A pleasant surprise, yes, but nevertheless, a surprise it is."
The dark-haired boy peered up at the portrait, still trying to see if he could find the person in it and being unable to. He wasn't at all sure if he was even supposed to be talking to the portraits in the Headmaster's office. Still, it had been the portrait who had began the conversation, so maybe McGonagall wouldn't get too upset about it... "Well, it's nice to--erm... it would be nice to meet you," he said hesitantly, "That is... if I could see you."
"Ah," said the portrait. "Just a moment and I'll be there. I'm actually busy in another portrait but if you'd kindly wait just a moment--certainly, your first time in the Headmaster's office must be a frightening thing--"
"It's not," lied Albus. "My dad's told me all about it and said that it's one of the best places there are in the castle."
"Did he now?" was the amused response. "Well, I'll have to give him my thanks. Sadly, I'm sure this office is very much different than the one in your father's recollection. Ah. And how rude I've been. May I ask as to what your name is, Mr. Potter?"
The young boy brightened, always glad to make a new friend--even if it was just a portrait. "Albus. Albus Severus Potter," he said with some amount of pride that he'd been able to feel since the time that his father reminded him of whom he was named after.
Quite suddenly, a face with a long, crooked nose and a long, white beard and bright blue eyes appeared from the side of the portrait. "Albus, you say?" asked the old wizard with some amusement and another emotion which made his eyes shine in a manner that Albus couldn't exactly name. "My, my. That was terribly kind of him after all that he had been through. And Severus, also? Dear me, I have to wonder what he would have thought of that..."
Now puzzled, Albus asked, "You know who I'm named after? Both names?"
"But of course," said the man as he stepped fully into view, settling back in the frame as if he were sitting in a chair and putting his hands together, eyes twinkling merrily. "It is hard not to know the names of those two Headmasters of Hogwarts. Quite interesting times, they were. Quite interesting."
"I hear there was a war," said Albus uncertainly.
"Of epic proportions, one could say," said the wizard with a nod.
