Title: The Longest Night
Scene Title: Day Out With Kid
Progress: WIP

It was not in any way fun.

Kid was not in any way nice.

So why was he smiling down at her as if this had been the best day ever, an ice cream cone in his hand being offered to her?

"Here," he said cheerfully, seeming quite proud of himself.

Aoko stared at the frozen treat with a slight frown. It shouldn't have been so off-putting, but then again... "How'd you know my favorite?"

Kid's smile didn't change at all, but he seemed a bit more guarded again. "Ah, you caught me," he said lightly before taking her hand and making her take hold of the cone. Then, before she could object, he sat next to her, already starting on a cone he'd produced out of no where. "I, of course, know a lot about people connected to people who are connected to more people who are connected to me."

He turned to her, waving his first and middle fingers on his right hand in the shape of a V at her. "It makes impersonating them easier!" he declared with a beaming smile.

Aoko stared at him for a moment, knowing she should have guessed. She sighed. "That isn't something to be proud of, you know," she stated lightly before beginning to work on her own cone.

She hadn't expected Kid to ask, quite seriously, "Nothing in my line of work is anything to be really proud of, but if I didn't act as if there were, would I be nearly as successful as I have been?"

Surprised, Aoko spun to him just in time to watch him shrug and smile wryly. "Well, then again, acting skills certainly are something to be proud of." he glanced to her, smile waarming some. "Wouldn't you agree, Aoko-san?"

Her lips twisted themselves into a frown as she turned back to her ice cream. "It's not all that impressive, pretending to be someone you're not," she answered somewhat stiffly.

"Ho?" Kid asked, seemingly made immensely curious by this statement. "You prefer the honest sort, then? That's too bad. And here I thought we've been getting along pretty well--"

Aoko spun to him again, cheeks pink, and shouted, "Why would I ever be interested in someone like you?"

Kid's grin became impossibly wide before he began to laugh. A full, heart-felt laugh that made Aoko twitch in annoyance. Just what did he find so funny, anyway? she thought sullenly, focusing on her ice cream cone again. It wasn't a silly question at all.

Why would someone like her have those sort of feelings for the man her father was supposed to catch? A criminal. That sort of thing made no sense, right? So why was she so embarrassed just because he was teasing her about such a thing?

It was decided.

Kid was not in any way a nice and gentlemanly sort of person, despite what his fangirls believed.

A sudden change in Kid's laughter, however, made Aoko look to him in alarm. "Idiot! Don't laugh like that if you're just going to hurt yourself!" she scolded him.

The thief chuckled still even as he put a hand to his abdomen, signalling just how bad the pain was. Kid didn't like to show if he was in pain or discomfort. "Aw, Aoko-san," he said, voice only slightly strained, "I thought you didn't care--"

She flushed for a second before loudly countering, "I'm only worried how upset Jii-san will be if you aggrivate it more like that."

"So cold..." Kid said, mimicking a child's hurt tone perfectly.

She ignored him and they sat there quietly on the bench in the park. Aoko had to admit, at least to herself, that Kid had picked a nice day for his first venture outside since the shooting. It was warm and sunny with a nice breeze that kept them from truly broiling in the summer heat.

Not a cloud in the sky, she thought to herself as she stared up at the spacious blue above her. The view must have been really something if Kid flew on days like this.

"Plenty of thermals, too," said thief commented idly, eyes also lifted to the sky. "Too bad I'm grounded for another month or so. Won't be nice like this for a long while."

Aoko watched him for a moment, seeing once again, that mask Kid wore slip a bit. "You must really like flying," she said, a slight smile coming onto her face.

Kid shrugged, the mask back in place. "Sure beats running on foot all the time," he responded thoughtfully.

The pleasant smile fell into a strained attempt to be civil. "Oh, really?" she asked, voice dangerous. "And what about the people chasing you?"

He looked to her, almost puzzled. "They have vehicles. Big advantage."

Aoko paused, hesitated.

... there was no way she was starting to agree with him.
