Title: Illusive Kuroba Kaitou
Summary: The role of a Kaitou is to protect items of value by stealing and then returning them. When one of these Gentleman Thieves comes across a deadly adversary, who better to become his phantom than his own son?
"Thanks for everything, Nakamori-kun!" the illusive white shadow called while saluting a fuming officer who had been given control of an entire police force that had been created just to capture this one thief. The one they knew as the infamous Kaitou 1412--Kaitou Kid. The young officer--not much younger than the Kid himself--swore up a storm at this while the thief took of into the night. The heist was over, and it was time to return home to his other life--the one that had someone waiting up for Kuroba Toichi.
A smile crossed his face--the Poker Face melting away as it had no purpose now as he had used his hang-glider to soar above the city. No matter how many years had passed, he would always be pleasantly surprised by the sight of Fumiyo sitting in the living room each night. Waiting for him as though his activities weren't more than questionable. It had been something that he hadn't planned on...
Falling in love and revealing to Fumiyo the nature of his 'trade.'
And she had accepted it so calmly, all those years ago. That had taken him month to get over. After all, it was hardly legal. That didn't seem to affect the young woman who he had then married and bore a son with, however. Fumiyo never asked too much as she understood the pros and cons of being married to a Kaitou. Especially to the up-and-coming Kaitou from the Kuroba line.
These thoughts of the past helped him push away the sinking feeling that had grown worse during this heist. It was a gut feeling of something that hadn't yet happen and yet was growing closer each time he donned Kaitou Kid's hat and monocle. That night, however, had been a much more loose and easy-going event than previous heists had been.
Perhaps he'd gotten off of the Organization's trail? Well, he'd find his way back.
Looking down, he could see that he was nearing one of his 'drop-offs,' where a change of clothes awaited him so he could return home without too much suspicion. He couldn't very well walk down the street as Kaitou Kid. He'd already had his fun that night with Nakamori-kun and just wanted to get home to Fumiyo and his son.
Kaito. Such a bright boy who took to the Arts like a duck to water (he wouldn't use fish and water as an analogy as little Kaito had a horrible fear of the aquatic creatures). His nine-year-old son had proved to be a very adept learner of simple magic tricks since he was four and slight-of-hand tricks since he was six. The boy could even use either hand to pick a lock or a pocket, much to Fumiyo's chagrin.
Toichi knew his wife understood why he chose to be what he was, but it was very apparent that she was reluctant to let Kaito follow in his stead. She'd give in, he knew. After all, Kaito was a Kuroba, and the Kuroba family had been involved with the Arts for generations. Of course, he understood her concerns. A Kaitou gained many an enemy, as Toichi had proved himself when he'd uncovered the Organization and Their goal.
It had been accidental, really. A Kaitou's job was to protect special items by stealing them, in either a flamboyant way or a very quiet and swift way, to show everyone that it could be done before the thief returned it. Usually--and most likely--the party who owned the stolen object would tighten security and make it harder to get to the items. Though after a few years, the Kaitou could be the judge of that. This was how he'd found this Organization.
During research for a heist, he'd someone stumbled upon a story of a particular gem that seemed to be targeted by Them. At first, he'd blown off the whole idea of such a gem existing, but then They went after him during a heist. Then he'd known it was real. Why else would They try to kill him for a simple and not too, too valuable diamond?
Because They had thought it could have been that gem.
Needless to say that after that heist--and every heist for a year now--he checked each gem he stole. In the moonlight, this gem the Organization was after would reveal itself as a gem of blood inside another. They were after it because it had the capability of granting a man one of his most fervent wishes.
Eternal life. Immortality.
Since uncovering this, Kaitou Kid had taken it upon himself to steal the gem first--and the Organization had been noticing. For months, Their people would be in the crowd somewhere, armed with a gun and destroying the Kid's 'No One Gets Hurt' rule.
It infuriated him to no end.
Ah, but he shouldn't think of it, now that he was on the ground again. A swift change of clothes and a short walk later, and he was home. Only he'd been extra quiet upon entering when, at the doorway, he'd seen Fumiyo asleep on the couch.
Again, he felt himself smiling--
Then Poker Face returned when Kounosuke Jii came from the kitchen. "I take it she wouldn't be deterred?" he asked his assistant with a light tone.
Jii shook his head. "I'm afraid so. She'd still be awake if I hadn't... added a few things into her tea." The slightly elder man paused long enough for Toichi to chuckle before continuing, "Forgive me, Master Toichi, but may I ask if... They were there?"
Toichi resisted the urge to sigh and merely glanced at his wife before answering, "No, but I have a feeling they'll be back..."
The words 'and something bad will happen' wouldn't complete the thought. It wasn't smooth or just right for him to say. So, it remained unspoken.
"How's Kaito?" he asked instead as he went over to the couch and sat beside the sleeping Fumiyo. He felt like sleeping himself, but he knew Jii would want to debrief him after a heist. The man really had been in service to the Kuroba Kaitou for a long time.
"He was in his room by 9, Master Toichi," answered Jii calmly. "Although, around 10:30, I thought I heard him practicing some."
Toichi yawned slightly, shaking his head. "He's worse than I was, really... and don't tell me what time it is."
Jii didn't respond, but the thief knew he understood. He knew it must have been near daybreak and that he had a real performance later in the day, but all he really wanted to do right then was sleep on the couch with his lovely wife while his son slept on in his room. Right then, he wanted to relax and be himself--not Kaitou Kid or the famous magician Kuroba Toichi...
Kaito rubbed his blurry eyes as he padded into the kitchen where his mother was standing, making breakfast... maybe lunch? The nine-year-old didn't really care and merely pulled on her apron.
Fumiyo looked down to him, surprised. "Oh, Kai-chan. You're awake," she said with some surprised before looking stern. "You were practicing the Arts again, weren't you?"
Kaito blinked up at her. "Where's Touchan?" he asked sleepily, not realizing that he had been at the edge of a lecture.
The question managed to distract his mother as she smiled a bit. "He has a performance this afternoon, remember?" At the tired shake of his head, she then informed him, "Touchan should be back tomorrow morning. Then you can show him how much you've improved."
What the two of them didn't know was that during that performance, something would go wrong. Reports would label it as a freak accident that happens even to the best magicians. In all actuality, Kuroba Fumiyo didn't find out about the death of her husband until Nakamori Ginzo came by with his daughter--Kaito's best friend--Aoko to give his condolences.
While his mother tried to deal with this news, Kaito was confused. His father was supposed to be back by then, right? Then why wasn't he there? When he asked Aoko this, the little girl scrunched her nose, thinking.
"Tousan said Ojisan left and won't come back," she said with a frown. "Like what happened to my Koi--"
Kaito froze at this, staring at the girl, who immediately asked what was wrong. There wasn't anything wrong... besides the fact that the small boy now understood what had happened to his father. Aoko wouldn't understand until a few years later when one of her relatives would pass on in old age.
The reason why Kaito was able to understand why his father wouldn't be coming back--ever--was because of the Koi that Aoko had mentioned. That fish had also been the reason he was terrified of fish. He'd never told Aoko, who grew to forget that Koi unless reminded by her best friend.
When he had been around the age of five, a few months after he'd met Aoko at the clock tower, he had already been taught most of the simple magic tricks. He loved showing his friend that he could do tricks like his father. Aoko, however, had pointed out that he couldn't make animals disappear, even if he could make almost any inanimate object vanish. That had gotten his upset, and he declared he could and would, even if his father hadn't gotten that far in his lessons.
So Aoko showed him to the small Koi, and he had taken over an hour and a half to catch it before he held it in one small hand (a very difficult task), placing a cloth over it with the other. Being so young, when Nakamori-san demanded to know what they were doing, Kaito had hid the fish behind his back. By the time Aoko's father discovered what he had been attempting, the Koi had died in his hands. Aoko had cried, but Kaito had remained quiet as Nakamori-san took the fish away.
Later on, Kaito's father taught him the correct way to go about doing that trick--as well as how to keep an animal comfortably on his person. The only thing was that Kaito wouldn't go near another fish. As he got older, kids would make fun of his fear, but thanks to his father's Poker Face, none of them realized that had been the reason for his phobia.
He'd killed that Koi, but someone else had killed his father.
For the longest of time, the son of the great magician Kuroba Toichi blamed whatever deity was out there for killing his father.
Then he'd found his father's secret room, and the Poker Face and magic tricks were put to better use than teasing Aoko or disrupting class. Along with the white suit, cape, hat, and monocle, Kuroba Kaito took up his father's mantle when Jii explained everything to him. The Organization, the Pandora gem, and... Kaitou Kid.
Flipping the monocle around on his hand, the young man eyed the old man who had once assisted his father. "So Touchan made it Kaitou Kid's duty to stop this Organization?" he asked as the old man wandered around the workshop-looking area of the hidden room.
"Yes, young Master Kaito," Jii answered, fixing up some objects on a desk that hadn't been touched for over eight years. "Master Toichi hadn't wanted Them to have something so powerful--"
"Bet They weren't the friendliest people around," commented Kaito off-handedly, though anger and a need to avenge the injustice that Organization had caused pulsed violently within him. With those feelings in mind, a plan was formed, and the boy nodded to himself before smirking, catching Jii's attention.
"Master Kaito?" the old man inquired before Kaito cupped the monocle, making it disappear before he grabbed a pair of white gloves that he had been sitting near.
"It's been eight years," noted the young man as he pulled on the gloves, "so They're way ahead in the game..." He flipped the white top-hat that had been hanging from a shelf onto his head, pulling it down low as he paused for a moment.
When he looked up again, the man that had been in the service of the Kuroba Kaitou had to struggle to keep his composure. With the hat pulled low, a white gloved hand fingering the brim, and a sharp glare shining off of the glass of the monocle on which the Kuroba luck charm hung... it was hard to tell whether the young man sitting on the table across from him was the original illusive Kaitou 1412 or...
The small smirk on Kaito's face became mischievous as he then finished, "...but even they can't keep a good Kaitou down... not even the phantom of Kaitou Kid."
