Here be a DC/MK fic I wrote 05/13/10 THAT I COMPLETELY FORGOT I WROTE 8D
He frowned heavily before thunking his head onto his desk.
It was bothering him again.
It wasn't as though this was an overly complicated subject--far from that, he was still currently in rudimentary maths and it was mind-numbing with how repetitive it was. No, it wasn't the subject that he was faced with currently that was driving him nuts. It was the subject that was currently off who knows where, laughing and plotting his next grand adventure or heist.
He couldn't even call that last adventure a heist because nothing was stolen, the only things broken were fakes, and the bastard had managed to somehow snuff out those two crooks.
... well, that was likely because Kaitou Kid was, in fact, related to the Phantom Lady of Twenty Faces.
And wouldn't that just explain how he learned to be a master of disguise, Kudo Shinichi under the guise of Edogawa Conan thought to himself as he stuck the back of his pen in his mouth and stared at his already-answered classwork in thought.
It wasn't that he was surprised that Kid's heist ended the way it did. On the contrary, Shinichi had gotten used to the idea that Kid was never going to have things go the way normal people would expect of him. Which was why Shinichi had been able to solve the puzzle that the thief had chosen to present to him. Even with past incidents which may or may not have involved some amount of superficial damage to the thief on the pseudo-child's end, the thief still went out of his way to put out a performance. And a riddle.
Shinichi's brow furrowed as he bit down on the plastic between his teeth.
There was one point of fact in all of this, however. Kaitou Kid has always had a unique record for heists. Shinichi had looked into this numerous times--mostly whenever the thief showed off a warning to the public. Recently, there had been a shift in his behavior, though. Involving more of defeating old puzzles and traps by a grand master of trap-setters and other such recallings to the past like the Ryoma heist. It might have been coincindence, but Shinichi always thought that if there is a pattern to the series of coincidence, then it's not simply just that but more...
Purposeful. He returns everything he steals--even what others that aren't himself have stolen, but he has a method and targets. He just doesn't want to kee--
That was when it hit him.
Shinichi nearly dropped his pen from his slack-jawed expression of realization, brain working frantically to remember how many times the thief had said just that one phrase that came to mind.
"Since this is not the jewel I'm looking for, I will return it."
The master of all puzzles.
The motivation behind the elusive Kaitou Kid's heists and behaviors.
. . . and it had been sitting in front of Shinichi's face every time the thief said it after the Green Dream heist when he even said it before a live audience.
Shinichi let his head drop to his desk again. Maybe beating the horrifying sensation of belated realization would have some effect.
