Fascinating!
I've always enjoyed that "this manuscript was found in a tomb/cave/ archive & translated" device - I had no idea it dated back so far.

I don't know if it started with "Amadis of Gaul" in a certain sense. During medieval times, a fair number of old manuscripts were discovered and translated, but these were the real thing, usually Greek or Roman texts.
