Help!

I can't draw females. I know this, and I'm trying to fix it, so while working on graphics for my site I decided to give one a shot. It's whack. It's uber-whack. The thing is, I can't put my finger on why this is the case. I think it's mostly the mouth, so I fucked around with that a bit. I want an outside opinion, so if you're reading this, ( Read more... )

I think the second picture is more 'feminine' than the first...probably because the lower lip is defined and the chin-line isn't quite so pronounced. At least that's the first thing I noticed ^^;

The hair is very kickass, though.

It seems like people are usually better at drawing their own gender, just because they can use themselves as a cheat-sheet if they need to doublecheck anatomy. Or maybe it's a psychology thing. I should not ponder these things at 3 AM.

I was afraid to draw women for the longest time. I think that's because all my friends wanted me to draw "hawt girlz" and I was too worried about coming off like a perv to even attempt it. I'm trying to make up for that now by studying normal females. The jawline is always where I fuck things up. I used to get that from my art teacher all the time: "That's not bad...for Dick Tracy in drag."

Thanks a lot for your input.

Second one is better than the first. The lips are more defined. Her hair in the bun is different color from the hair in the front though. It looks a little off to me.

But other than that, I'd like to be her ^_^

The hair being off was my shitty attempt at establishing distance through color. Objects further into the distance are less saturated, so I used a less saturated red for the hair in the back. That was a big miss. I thought I'd sneak it by without it being a big deal, but you got me. You win this round, detective! Seriously though, you obviously have coloring skills, any tips you want to share for shading and high lighting? I don't think in values very well.

But hey, thanks for giving me your critique!

B all the way. While "A" is still a good drawing, "B" has the more feminine jawline and lips. I don't know a lot of women who only wear lipstick on their top lip. Good shit though, It probably just bothers you because it's not the same vision as was in your head.

Oh it's definitely not what was in my head. Fuck, it's not even what was in my sketch book. I'm not very adept at Illustrator and I have to keep making adjustments for things I did in pencil that won't translate. Shading the upper lip is one trick that looks ok in pencil, but doesn't work at all in color. Thanks for pointing it out though.

Over your drawing slump yet? Did you get FFXI uninstalled alright? Dude, fucking GET Xbox Live and join Glen, Dave, Jimmy and I's Star Wars Battlefront clan. That game is INSANE on-line. I'd say the single player alone is worth buying the game. Give it a shot if you have the cash.

like I said before dude, I'd love to get live, but I'm a poor man. I don't have the cash to buy Live, the router I need to work it, and then the games. It upsets me that I'm seriously out of touch with you, almost specifically because I don't have x-box live, but I just don't have the money.
It was a major debate wether to even spend 20 bucks on Neverwinter nights.

Drawing is funny sometimes huh? You can draw a perfectly good drawing, very good, but still hate it because it wasn't what you were going for. BTW, what's the new website theme, I'll have to draw a new avatar.

I know your cash/internet situation, I just keep harassing you because you're probably the only person who may get as addicted as I tend to. Dave and Glen are cool to play with, but they fit games around their working and drinking time. That's just not how it's supposed to be. I'm not legitimately pressuring you, I'm just keeping you in the loop on what's the hotness in case you suddenly are able to play online.

There isn't really a new "theme" for the website. Basically, I just use a lot of red, army green, and gold. Oh, and stars. Lots of stars. I may still stick loosely with the communism thing, but I'm losing the molotav cocktails and gasmasks as those seem to be what says "terrorism" to most of the people I've heard from. You can pretty much do whatever you want, as I'll give you your own page and tailor it to what you do.

I think it's the manly jawline.

I couldn't get rid of the line for the jaw, that's one of the problems I have due to my limited knowledge of Illustrator. Is it the lower jaw, or the chin that looks most off to your eye? Like, if I toned down or removed the line running from the lower ear and beneath the cheek, would it look better or is the chin/mouth area off too? Thanks for your help though. And on a random side note, I like your user icon a lot for some reason.
