I figure I might as well just vote. Any vote to help NOT have McCain/Palin in office seems extremely beneficial. Plus if I don't vote, I have no right to bitch about politics for the next 4 years. ;D

i can't say that i agree that if you don't vote you don't have any right to complain, of course it depends how constructive your complaints are. just sitting around saying "fuck the government" is not useful in anyway, whether you've voted or not. and there are many better ways to get involved and change things than voting. my decision not to vote is a kind of protest or boycotting of the electoral system so you could even argue that it is a form of participation. but i do see your point about wanting to vote. it's nice that we live in a state that mccain's camp already admitted defeat, so even if i don't vote, i know that my lack of voting won't contribute to michigan being a red state, most likely. ok this comment ended up too long....

the electoral system isn't the only thing that is fucked up, our entire governmental system is fucked up, industrial civilization is fucked up, the global economy is fucked up, etc. etc. etc. etc. i have become increasingly interested in anarchism as a school of though and am starting to subscribe to that view (i'm guessing you know, but anarchy means no authority or power structure, in other words, no government). i'm not voting because i don't recognize authority. i am realizing that authority, power, wealth and greed (in other words, so called "democracy" and capitalism) are the root of most of the world's problems. if obama is elected over mccain, there will not be less violence in the world and there will not be a more equal distribution of resources and the planet will not be saved and racism will not end. there need to be huge systemic changes, probably starting with how we educate our children and live our own lives ( ... )

Just as much as you think not voting is not supporting our messed up government, at the same time it is. You might think you're making a statement but you're just sitting around talking about how fucked up the world is and how it could be better.

I'm not saying your vote will count the way you want it to or will change the world or anything but it'll do more than sitting at home will.

i don't really see how not voting supports anything, also you don't really know anything about what i'm doing or not doing. just because i'm not voting doesn't mean i'm just lazy or not proactive. i'm not gonna vote for a guy who i don't like or want to see in power just so other people are comfortable that i'm doing enough or that it appears to other people that i'm not lethargic. i'm not trying to make a big statement, i'm just trying to figure out how to live my own life to reflect my beliefs, which is that government (not just our current government) is fucked up. bleh i should have known better than to write in my lj about this because now i feel like i have to prove something to people about myself. whatever.

also i am wondering what is wrong with talking about how the world could be better?

I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm saying it doesn't help. Inaction does nothing. Inaction only hurts the cause.

I understand what you're doing. In your mind, a vote for president would be a vote for all the shit that Bush got us into, a vote for the worst in politics, a vote that would be going against your ideals and beliefs. In any other world, in any other election, I would understand. But not voting because you have some beliefs that you feel contradict your vote, especially as a female voter, as a person who wants a better world... not voting is stupid ( ... )
