Chapter 5

Academy Medical Center - Present Day

It was early evening when Uhura left the medical center. She waited patiently for the transport shuttle that would take her back to the dorms, all the while thinking of what had just happened. Spock had actually reached out to her and kissed her. Ok, it was just her hand, but Spock had initiated the contact with her. It had been really sweet and the skin on the back of her hand still tingled slightly where his lips had pressed against it. Uhura bit her lip, and focused her thoughts inwards. Ok, she wasn’t exactly a novice in the sex department, but she certainly wasn’t promiscuous either, no Gaila like proportions there! But in all fairness to the Orion, there weren’t many of any species who would be able to keep up with her, though Uhura suspected that James Kirk could probably give Gaila a run for her money, if the academy rumor mill was anything to go by. And for Gaila, her sexual prowess was simply a normal Orion woman’s healthy sexual appetite. But going back to Spock, even accidental touching was a biggie, would be for any Vulcan, whether they be half-human or not. Uhura had always tried to be very careful about touching him, though she would slip up occasionally, but still she was having a hard time wrapping her head around the fact that Spock had purposefully and knowingly touched her.

The shuttle arrived and Uhura boarded, grateful it was almost empty. She sat down and absently rubbed the spot on her hand again where Spock’s kiss had been, stared out of the window and sighed gently, the spot still felt warm and tingly. When Uhura finally walked into her dorm room it was to find her room-mate sitting on the edge of her bed and wonders of wonders actually alone and fully clothed in her academy uniform staring at the PADD in her hand. Gaila looked up, worry marring her lovely features.

“You ok Ny?” Gaila asked. “Girl, you look like you could use a drink.” Gaila stood up, put the PADD down and moved towards Uhura.

Uhura noted that Gaila even made the trouser academy uniform sexy, damn it! She looked like she was poured into the burgundy fabric and why oh why, didn’t the color clash with Gaila’s green-skin/red-head combination? No, of course it wouldn’t. Gaila quite frankly could make a sack of garbage look hot. If Uhura didn’t like Gaila so much, and also didn’t know that the Orion was a total sweetheart, she would understand why quite a few of the other female cadets wouldn’t get within ten feet of her. Just way too much competition.

“It’s ok Gaila, just one hell of a day.” Uhura smiled weakly accepting her friend’s arm around her shoulder. “I know I should have just left once I knew that Commander Spock was being taken care of, but I felt responsible somehow, you know, I felt like someone needed to be there for him. It just felt like the right thing to do, the logical thing.” Uhura let Gaila lead her to her bed and they sat on the end of it.

“Look Ny, you’re a hell of a student, completely anal of course.” Gaila smiled to take the sting out of the words. “But very dedicated to whatever task you’re set. Why do you think Commander Spock chose you to be his teacher’s aide? Ny, you take every responsibility seriously, very seriously. I don’t think the other teachers aides go the extra mile that you do. Just be careful though Hun, you know what they say about relationships, that we start to imitate the one we’re attracted to. Logical Ny?”

“Come on Gaila, first one of the psych students gets his digs in and now you?” Uhura rolled her eyes at her friend. “I will admit to having a slight crush, slight is the word Gaila, on Commander Spock, nothing more. There can’t and won’t be anything more, I’m his student and he’s my professor, my superior, etcetera ad nauseum. The kiss was nothing, I mean we’ve bumped into each other before, it’s not like you can avoid contact forever with someone is it? Eventually you’re going to touch them, inevitability right? I mean he’s Vulcan, ok, he’s half-Vulcan, but that’s even more complicated….” Now Uhura was babbling, not even aware of her words, just the rush to get them out.

“Whoa! Back it up Ny, what kiss? When? Where? Spock? Ok Ny, go slowly, and tell Auntie Gaila all about it.” Gaila squirmed to get her backside into a more comfortable position. Uhura was about to spill it!

“It’s nothing Gaila, it wasn’t that type of kiss, not even on the lips; Spock took my hand and kissed it, ok? That’s all that happened.” Uhura looked down at her hand. Still tingling.

“Sorry Ny, but couldn’t that be construed as the Vulcan equivalent of ‘getting to first base?’, I mean Vulcans really don’t like to be touched, trust me I’ve been there and tried to do that. That was before I found out that Orion pheromones do absolutely nothing to Vulcans. The most horrible five days of my then young life!” Gaila shuddered dramatically.

Uhura smiled slightly. “Gaila, I’m sure that Commander Spock will be able to explain his actions quite logically and rationally. I’m not even going to go down that road at this time. I mean come on, if it had been anyone other than Commander Spock, I wouldn’t even be getting this flustered would I?  And you know something else?” Uhura’s smile widened and she pointed a finger at Gaila. “You’re probably right about the drink, I think after the day I’ve had I’m entitled to one evening of goofing off; I’m up for it if you are.”

“Ok Girl, but you seriously are not wearing that outfit, you’ve got twenty minutes to be fresh and fabulous!” Gaila smiled at Uhura and shooed her into the bathroom. “And Ny, how about letting the hair flow free for a change, let loose all the way baby!”

Uhura chuckled as she shut the bathroom door and started to undress. Have some fun Ny, you can do this, one night off isn’t going to hurt you. She glanced down at her hand again, strange that spot was still tingling. Uhura shrugged and started the water for her shower.

Raal Province - Vulcan - Present Day

The small stone dwelling stood as it had done for centuries staring with glassless window eyes at the reddish sandy beach the sloped downwards into the gently lapping waves of the shallow coastal inlet. The dwelling had been built so that it blended into its surroundings, if you didn’t know to look for it, it was almost impossible to spot.

Kallan stood just outside of the dwelling’s doorway and stared off out at some point on the distant horizon. It was cool here, late afternoon and the slight tang of minerals from the sea perfumed the air. He was glad that he wore his cloak, at least it kept him warm for the most part. He tilted his head back towards the door in time to see the elder Vulcan woman step out, she too was cloaked.

“Have we been able to ascertain the disturbance within the link?” Kallan’s voice was quiet, cold. “The Subject did not complete the task assigned this time, though I have been assured by yourself and the others that this ‘aberration’ is merely one set-back and to be expected based upon the Subject’s unique physiology and psychology.”

The Vulcan woman lowered her head. “There has been damage to some of her synapses, they can be repaired. However, I caution at re-establishing the link at this time. My recommendation is that we allow her synapses to heal; when that is accomplished then proceed with the link.”

Kallan clenched his jaw slightly. “You personally had given your assurance that this particular Subject would be ideal. You stated that the Subject’s physiology and psychology would make linking and control implantation easier, and now I find myself hearing that it is this very physiology and psychology that is creating the problem that we now find ourselves in. Timing within our mission is crucial.” Kallan paused, and lifted the Vulcan woman’s chin up, forcing her to make eye contact. “We cannot wait until our ‘Transmitter’s’ synapses heal, the link will be re-established. I do not expect to see you again until this matter is resolved.” Kallan released her chin and turned his back. He did not feel her dark eyes bore into the back of his head, or see them tighten with hatred.

Starfleet Academy, San Francisco, Earth - Present Day

The insistent beep of the alarm pounded within Uhura’s head. She groaned and turned her face into her pillow, half-heartedly trying to reach for the alarm and failing. Oh she hurt!  Her mouth felt like she’d vacuumed the entire dorm with it. Her eyelids barely chinked opened and then shut again quickly, too much light! She couldn’t remember getting back to the dorm, let alone back into their room. She glanced over at the other bed, red tresses poked out from the covers followed by blue eyes and the rest of a very pretty emerald colored face.

“Ny, either the alarm goes, or Commander Spock won’t be the only one being treated at the med center. We seriously only just got in two hours ago, can’t you just take one day off?” Gaila’s face disappeared back under the covers.

Uhura managed to reset the alarm for a more civilized hour and with a final groan, she too buried herself under the covers and let sleep overtake her again.

Uhura arrived at the medical center just after 1:00pm that afternoon, Spock had been discharged, no reason yet for the plasma burns had been found. She found him in the hospital room waiting for her. His back was to the doorway and he was staring out of the window, he turned as Uhura entered the room.

“Commander…Spock, I see you still have to wear the regeneration gel packs, though those wounds look almost healed. And you look, well, you look rested” Uhura was making small talk.

“Indeed, though I cannot say the same for you Nyota. You appear to be tired, you did not need to come down here to escort me to my apartment. I am fully capable to taking myself home.”

“Never said you weren’t Spock.” Uhura stated quietly as they made their way out of the room down the halls to the bank of lifts. They waited in silence for a lift and when one came they both entered it, still silent.  It wasn’t until they were walking out of the double doors of the medical center that Uhura spoke.

“I’m sorry Spock, I’m cranky because you’re right, I didn’t get much sleep last night. I did a really immature and stupid thing. I went out with Gaila and drank too much, and…to be honest I have no idea what else I did, I just know that I was worried about you, and confused a little…well and feeling a little guilty for leaving you last night.” Uhura gave a side-long glance to Spock as they walked. He had insisted that he would prefer to walk, so that’s what they were doing. His face remained passive, hands behind his straight back, his walk very precise.

“I have observed that humans can sometimes behave in a manner that they find contradictory to their own perception of self. Your decision to allow me to rest last night was a sound one. And your decision to go out with your friend was to allow you to ‘rest’ as well. To take time off as it were and just be yourself?” Spock’s gaze locked with Uhura’s. “I find the logic in your behavior to be sound Cadet Uhura. I believe that the human saying is that you ‘recharged your batteries’.” With that said they continued to walk, this time the silence more companionable.

Uhura chuckled as they neared the courtyard in front of the teacher dorms. “You know Spock, I wouldn’t exactly say that my batteries have been recharged, but I believe that I had a good time, at least what I can remember of it…”

Uhura’s sentence was interrupted, by a male voice very friendly and warm yelling across the yard. “Hey Uhura, thanks for last night, you were awesome babe! You really rocked my world!”

Uhura groaned, James Kirk had struck again and for the life of her she only vaguely remembered him last night before the blur and too many Jacks and Cardassian Sunrises had taken over. Oh crap!, what had she done? She didn’t dare look at Spock now, her blush turned her cheeks the color of warm coffee.

“I believe Cadet Uhura that I can find my own way up to my quarters.” Spock stated quietly.

Oh crap! Think Ny, think! Uhura couldn’t think. “No Commander, I will escort you safely in and make sure you’re settled, then you can dismiss me.”

Spock appeared as though he would argue the point but instead nodded stiffly and allowed her to follow him through the doors and up to his quarters. He blocked her way from his door however. “You do not need to escort me in Cadet. That would be unnecessary.”

Uhura pursed her lips. “Commander Spock you were either in some kind of accident, or altercation, which may have begun here, or not, as the case may be. I’m escorting you in whether you like it or not!” With that Uhura slid past Spock into the living room area and stood looking back at him.

Spock’s face was emotionless, his eyes though spoke volumes as he came towards her. “I do not wish to keep you Cadet, it would appear that the recharging of your batteries was quite fruitful last night.”

Uhura kept her eyes on his and lifted her chin. “I know for a fact that nothing happened between Cadet Kirk and me. That ship will never leave dry dock, he knows it and I know it. Anything I did last night did not in any way, shape, or fashion, involve any physicality with Kirk. You on the other hand touched me. And yes, you were in the hospital and yes, if you were anyone else I could dismiss it. But you’re you! I try my hardest and go out of my way not to touch you, unless it’s accidental. But you touched me! You kissed my hand and I can still feel it, even now. It still tingles.” Uhura took a breath not letting Spock break eye contact. She was angry.

“And now you’re going to go all sanctimonious on me? Even emotional? Jealous even Spock? They don’t call me the Ice Princess behind my back for nothing Commander. I’m aware of my reputation. When I enter into a relationship I want to connect on many levels, and yes even though I can be immature at times, that’s the type of relationship I want..not a fling with the likes of Kirk! I want…I want…”

Uhura didn’t get a change to finish her sentence. Warm arms had slipped around her, one hand sliding up to gently cradle her head, while the other pressed into the small of her back pushing her into a warm wall of heat. She didn’t have time to register lips, warm and slightly moist sliding onto hers, working over hers, or her own lips parted slightly, her little gasp of surprise swallowed up by the heat of the kiss. Spock was kissing her again, only this was no chaste bowing over her hand type of kiss. This kiss involved heat, lips and tongues. Spock’s tongue slid in and out of her mouth slowly, tasting her, teasing her own tongue to follow. Uhura’s arms had found their way around his waist and she held on as he continued to plunder her mouth. Spock’s head tilted back slightly and he kissed her again, this time nibbling her lower lip gently before sliding his own down her neck, his teeth gently scraping the sensitive skin there.

Uhura groaned and slid one hand up Spock’s back and up into the hair at the nape of his neck. One finger found itself tracing his ear up to the tip, while her other hand glided down and cupped his buttock. Spock continued to kiss and suck Uhura’s neck while her own lips moved across his cheek and joined her finger at his ear, she licked the lobe and trailed the tip of her tongue up and down from the elegant tip watching it flush a light green and making Spock’s breathing hitch. Their lips moved back to drink again from each other, Uhura’s tongue traced the inner seam of Spock’s lip. Passion was flaring, so much so that Uhura didn’t register at first that Spock had stopped reciprocating and now stood stock still, hands now fluttering loosely to his sides. Uhura pulled back from him, her gaze heavy and lidded as she stared into Spock’s. He was breathing hard, his cheeks flushed green. He was staring at her as if he had never seen her before.

“Cadet Uhura, I…I..profusely apologize for my behavior. I have no excuse. I will of course report myself immediately to the Student Ethics Committee. I have assaulted a Cadet. Please call security if you feel unsafe, you will of course be expected to file a complaint.”

“Spock! You’ve have to be joking! No..” Uhura put her hand up. “I know Vulcans don’t joke, but you didn’t assault me, you kissed me and I reciprocated, I reciprocated, damn it!” Uhura was yelling now. “Spock don’t you dare do anything, at least not tonight, please! I’m begging you!”

Spock stared at Uhura and slowly nodded. “I will try to meditate on this tonight. Now please Cadet, you must leave, I am not sure what I am capable of and I do not wish to injure you further.”

Uhura wanted to protest, but one look at Spock told her that she wouldn’t get through to him tonight. Hopefully tomorrow would bring better news. Oh Crap!
