Chapter 6
Starfleet Academy - San Francisco - Earth
Monday morning finally came, Uhura awoke bleary eyed and feeling stuffed up and almost flu like. She had finally managed to sleep after hours of tossing and turning and replaying the events of the day before. Gaila had tried her hardest to find out what was wrong after Uhura had appeared in their dorm room, looking almost shell-shocked, but Uhura had just clammed up and stated that she just really needed to catch up on her sleep after their adventure two nights ago. She did have to ask Gaila one thing though.
“About Kirk, what exactly happened between him and me? I’m a huge blank when it comes to most of the evening, please don’t tell me he and I did anything?” Uhura’s eyes were huge, her face tense.
Gaila almost wanted to tease her about Kirk, but one look at Uhura’s face and she knew that Uhura wouldn’t take it lightly this time. “Ny, nothing happened, Jim got you riled up and you ended up on the top of the table singing your heart out. You two were pretty much arguing all night and he found the right buttons to push and he just kept egging you on, and plying you with shot after shot. We couldn’t get you off the tabletop though once you’d started. You can be a mean drunk sweetie.”
Uhura held her head in her hands. “I’m going to kill him! Jim Kirk the asswipe jerk, better be praying right now to whatever deity will put up with him. When I’m finished with him not even his good friend Doctor McCoy will be able to stitch up the pieces!”
Gaila winced; Jim had really done it now. Many people found to their detriment that the last thing you wanted to do to Nyota Uhura was completely piss her off. And Jim had just managed to get himself added to that list. In fact Jim was probably public enemy number one as far as Uhura was concerned. If Jim were smart, he would stay low and as far away from Uhura as he could get. Gaila had heard the Mars colony of New London was nice and they just re-terra formed it. Jim could finish his studies via holo-class. Though, even that might not be far enough away to escape Uhura’s wrath.
Gaila watched as Uhura fumbled about getting dressed, her usual grace gone. Something was still eating at her; that much Gaila could see. Uhura disappeared into the bathroom and re-emerged some time later looking a bit more like herself. She quickly used the Comm-Link careful not to let Gaila hear what was being said. Whatever it was Gaila could see it must have been good as Uhura’s shoulders straightened and her sigh was one of relief.
“Gaila, I just have to drop something off at the lab; my first class doesn’t begin until 10:00am, are we able to do lunch?” Uhura’s tone was much lighter.
“Well I have Advanced Stellar Cartography until 2:00pm, and then my Interspecies Diplomacy class begins at 3:00pm. Can you believe Professor Ari-iin accused me of attempting to influence the debate last week? Stuffy Andorian! And I don’t believe that he even knows what my face looks like, his eyes and his antenna are too busy focusing on my breasts!” Gaila grinned. ‘Call me around 2:00pm sweetie and we’ll try to set it up.”
Gaila grabbed her PADD and blowing a quick kiss in Uhura’s direction left the room. Uhura sighed again and slowly started putting PADDs into her book-bag. Spock hadn’t gone to the Ethics Committee yet, there was still time for Uhura to see him, hopefully convince him not to ruin both his career and hers. Not that her career would be ruined in that way, she would be portrayed as the victim. She flung her bag over her shoulder and made her way out of the dorms and headed towards Spock’s office. She knew his Advanced Romulan class was not scheduled to begin until 9:00am, so that would give them time to talk.
Uhura approached the door to Spock’s office with a feeling of apprehension and dread knotting up her stomach. She took a deep breath and pushed the door-pad, hearing the swoosh of the door slide open and revealing Spock sitting at his desk, hands in a steepled position, dark eyes looking up at her. She moved into the room aware of Spock’s eyes following her every movement; she sat in the chair and angled her body so that she was facing him. They didn’t speak, just looked at each other. Uhura broke the silence.
“You haven’t filed a report yet with the Ethics Committee?”
“Not as yet, you informed me last night to wait until this morning. I assumed that you would want to speak to me about the incident first. I assure you Cadet Uhura that I fully intend to file a grievance on your behalf. You should not have to be concerned that you will be assaulted again.” At this Spock’s gaze lowered and his cheeks stained green.
“Spock.” Uhura spoke very quietly. “Listen to me; you didn’t assault me, ok? I was completely taken by surprise, but I don’t think that at any time I said no, or that my body language could in any way be interpreted that I wasn’t enjoying the experience. I kissed you back, your impeccable memory should have that fact stored somewhere.”
“Cadet Uhura…Nyota, you were correct though in your statement that I was displaying jealousy. I was jealous of your interactions with Cadet Kirk, whatever they were, no matter how innocent.” Spock paused and made eye contact once again with Uhura. “I lost my emotional control last night, and that does not excuse my actions. And I was unable to meditate. The serenity would not come to me. I have made an appointment at the Vulcan Embassy with a healer, It is imperative that I find out what is happening to me.”
“Well Spock that is a completely sensible course of action to take. I can tell you with all honesty that I’m not afraid to be around you on my own. I don’t feel threatened in any way, and I don’t see the logic in going to the Ethics Committee just yet with any grievance. You don’t have all the facts to back anything up.”
“No Nyota, I do not at this time.” Spock agreed.
“And if you had gone ahead, I was going to pull out my Plan B.” Uhura grinned at him.
“Plan B?” Spock tilted his head, his eyes betraying confusion.
“Well, if you had gone to the Ethics Committee and reported our kiss. I would of course have to concur with you that you did kiss me, but my sudden case of amnesia would only allow me to remember the kiss at the hospital. And I hardly believe kissing my hand in a ‘thank you’ gesture could be considered assault. My room-mate of course could corroborate my side of the story.”
“You would perjure yourself?” Spock’s eyebrow rose up, threatening to hide under his bangs.
“Not perjury Spock, I would be agreeing that you kissed me, just not which kiss. I’m not about to help you commit career suicide. So we’re agreed that we will get to the bottom of this before we go ahead with any type of grievance?”
“We are agreed. There are just two more items I need to discuss with you Cadet Uhura.” Spock was back to formalities. “While you have indicated that you feel no concern being alone with me, I cannot state that I..” Spock seemed to pick his words carefully. “I cannot state that I feel the same. I do not want you in a situation where I can cause injury to you. I therefore have asked that you be terminated as my teacher’s aide effective as of today.
Uhura gasped. “You did what?!”
“I have also checked your class schedule, you have only 3 more classes of mine to complete, and 2 of those require the lab. I have asked Professor Rutledge to oversee those 2 classes of yours. Your last class with me Cadet Uhura is tomorrow at 8:00am.”
Uhura was shocked; she looked at Spock and had to blink several times. She tried to slow her breathing down, but instead found herself hyperventilating. Her head was swimming. “I can’t believe that you did that! I mean I understand on the one hand why you think you needed to, but you didn’t even talk to me first!”
“It was the right course of action to take Cadet Uhura. Now if you will excuse me, I have a class to give.” With that Spock stood up from his desk, picked up a PADD and excused himself leaving Uhura in his office standing still in shock.
****************
The next few days flew by for Uhura, she finished her final class with Spock, barely glancing at him but all the while aware of when he looked at her. She was the first to hand her PADD in to him, not even speaking and the first to exit the class. She didn’t even talk to Kirk, not even rising to any bait he tried to set which got Kirk worried. Gaila had warned him that Uhura was out to get him, but so far, nothing. So, Kirk thought, it was psychological warfare Uhura was using. Well let the games begin!
Uhura had decided that she wouldn’t apply to be a teacher’s aide with another professor, which left her with a couple of free afternoons. It was her first free afternoon that found her outside of Spock’s office with a sense of déjà-vu. She hadn’t spoken to him since their talk and she had made sure after their last class together to try her best to avoid him right now. Uhura didn’t normally hold grudges, but Spock had brought that out in her. She pushed the door pad and waited for it to chime. Spock of course had reset the door pad, she now could only enter his office as a guest.
A moment later the door slid open and she heard Spock’s voice telling her to come in. He was sitting on the two-seater, PADD in hand, his expression one of surprise at seeing her.
“Cadet Uhura, is there something I can do for you?” Spock’s voice was pitched low.
“Nothing Commander, I just wanted to see how you were, it’s been almost a week since your hospital stay.” Uhura took the chair and sat opposite him. Spock seemed to shift slightly. Uhura stared at him and kept eye contact.
“Cadet Uhura, I appreciate your concern, but as I have stated before I do not think it prudent or safe for you to be in my office alone with me.”
“Ok Commander.” Uhura rose and moved towards the door. She pushed the door pad and pressed down on it, locking it in place. The door swooshed open and stayed. She moved back to the chair and sat. “Technically, and yes I’m stretching it a bit, we’re not alone now are we?”
Spock blinked at her in astonishment. Uhura smiled back at him and straightened her back, two could play at being stubborn, she thought.
Spock shifted in his seat again and put the PADD down. “Cadet Uhura, I do not wish to appear impolite, but I have an appointment scheduled that I must attend.”
“Oh? Is it your appointment at the Vulcan Embassy with a healer?” Uhura leaned forward.
Spock regarded her. “Cadet Uhura I do not wish to discuss this matter.”
“So it is that appointment. I’m not prying Spock, last time we spoke you talked about making the appointment. I’m glad you did.” Uhura stood up and Spock followed suit.
“So, are we going by private shuttle or campus transport?” Uhura asked.
Spock stared at her. “We, Cadet Uhura are not going. I am going by transport shuttle.”
“Well here’s the thing Spock.” Uhura was enjoying this. “I’m not your student anymore or your teacher’s aide, so I’m not directly or indirectly under your chain of command. And while you are a Commander and I’m just a Cadet, my free time is my own and I choose at this time to visit the Vulcan Embassy, and since the transport shuttle is public, there isn’t anything you can do, except of course call for a private shuttle. Which if I’m right will arrive probably at least 10 minutes after the campus shuttle leaves. And the private transports are not always reliable are they?”
Uhura patiently waited for Spock to process her statement. She kept her face composed. Finally Spock seemed to realize that whether he liked it or not Uhura was coming with him. He nodded towards the door.
“Very well Cadet Uhura, after you.”
“Thank you Spock. Oh and when it’s just you and I, it’s Nyota, ok?” Uhura couldn’t help it, she grinned at him. “Let’s go, we don’t want to be late.”
