Chapter 10
Raal Province - Vulcan
Kallan was angry; he could feel it coiling up from the pit of his stomach, flickering outwards along nerve endings and muscles. All they had worked for, the promises about to come to fruition and now this? Wholly unacceptable! He stood within the confines of the small structure only half listening to the people working behind him. Vulcans. Logical, emotionless..ha! Even he a Rigelian knew better than that, knew that these Vulcans shared more in common with his own species psychologically as well as internally. Ha! They were more emotional than Humans if the tension in this small structure could be believed. These Vulcans were certainly not suppressing their emotions by any stretch of the imagination. He needed to leave this room, needed to be away from them for just a moment to gather his thoughts. His eyes narrowed to slits as he observed one of the older Vulcans, her small hands brushing back the long dark hair of the young woman who sat quietly on a small bench in the center of the structure, a young woman whose own gaze was fixated at the wall. Kallan could make out the implant by the side of her ear, the spider-webbing of conduits under her skin connecting telepathic points, he was also surprised to see another implant by her collar bone, an implant that had been obscured by her hair; he walked over the young woman and older Vulcan.
“T’Pana, why is there another implant on T’Pring? My understanding is that only one was necessary. Or is this yet again a breakdown of the link between her and the Subject?” Kallan purposely didn’t use the Subject’s name despite knowing it, he felt it was concession enough that he use T’Pring’s name as opposed to simply calling her the ‘transmitter’.
“This implant appears to have developed this morning; it was not evident last night.” T’Pana’s dark eyes betrayed nothing, though Kallan felt safe in the knowledge that this new development concerned the older woman greatly, after all T’Pring was her offspring, given to their cause freely.
“Has the link been re-established? We cannot have this continual disruption, our faction has already been breached, and it will only be a matter of time before the Federation itself is snapping at our heels.” Kallan pursed his lips and continued his narrowed gaze upon both T’Pring and T’Pana, the new implant would be brought up later for another discussion; right now the link had to be re-established.
“The link is unable to be established fully at this time. A new development has made itself known through the tenuous connection T’Pring has now. We must rid the link of this new connection.” T’Pana was frowning openly. “It would appear that the bond between T’Pring and Spock has been supplanted by a newer bond.” T’Pana had chosen not the call Spock the ‘Subject’ indeed she had never referred to him by either his name or that reference until now. “It appears that Spock has managed to begin the bonding process with a human.”
“Human?” Kallan stepped forward. “How was this overlooked? The Subject was chosen by you because of his unique heritage. His heritage was supposed to make the linking easier; he was supposed to be easier to control! I was assured that his telepathic abilities were not as strong as a full-blooded Vulcan; that was why he was chosen!” Kallan was shouting now. “You have all lost sight of the goal that we seek. The Subject should never have been allowed to refuse the Vulcan Science Academy. That was our goal with this Subject. He was supposed to stay on Vulcan. Instead we find ourselves with set-back after set-back since his departure to Earth. This is unacceptable!”
Kallan felt an overwhelming silence within the structure. All the Vulcans within, with the exception of T’Pring, were staring at him, he breathed out heavily, the noise welcome now in the stillness. When he spoke again it was deceptively calm.
“T’Pana, this new bond that is forming, can it be eradicated?” Kallan again leveled his gaze onto her.
“There are ways. We are aware that the bond is not forming as quickly as a full Vulcan one would, indeed it appears to be happening gradually, perhaps because of both Spock’s physiology and the fact that the other is fully human.” T’Pana broke off and again pushed back her daughter’s hair. “I offer that this presents us with more than a ‘set-back’ as you would say. Through this new bond, even if Spock is still unaware of what is happening to him, we cannot guarantee that the human would be so unaware. Indeed I am more inclined to believe that Spock has been aware of us for some time on some level of his mind, even if it is not conscious on his part. Explain how he disabled the sensor array in his living quarters that we were using to monitor him, how he knew we had planted it? Explain how the information we have taken from him regarding Starfleet has not helped our cause? You have explained before that any information obtained is of use, I find myself now questioning your statement regarding this matter. Explain this to us, to me?”
Kallan didn’t answer her; instead he turned to the other Vulcans and spoke quietly, dangerously. “The link will be re-established. T’Pana stated that there are ways to rid ourselves of this new bond, this new formation. You will all begin to work on this immediately. The Subject cannot be harmed, he is still of some use to us, but the other, the human element needs to be gotten rid of and disposed of quickly. I don’t care how that happens.”
Kallan looked over again at T’Pana and said almost conversationally. “If we did not need you to ‘be’ T’Pring’s public voice as it were, I would have you killed right now. You are never to question me again in front of the others, do I make myself clear?”
T’Pana nodded silently, her face lowered so that Kallan could not see the hatred in her eyes.
“Oh and another thing?” Kallan remarked as he turned to go, “We have very little of the technology left right now until I make another run to our supplier. T’Pring is to have no more implants.” He didn’t wait for T’Pana’s answer and swept out of the small space.
Starfleet Academy - San Francisco - Earth
Three days. It had been three days since Uhura had last seen Spock. It felt like a lifetime ago. Yes, he was there mentally with her, the bond between them continuing to strengthen. Spock’s mental voice less of a whisper, more like his own voice, but somehow different, richer and more emotional if Uhura could describe it. She remembered as they had sat together listening to Surat and Prem explain what they knew had been happening to Spock. How desperate the situation would become for both of them. Although Spock had remained outwardly calm and placid, betraying nothing, inwardly there was a maelstrom brewing. Shame, disbelief, anger, self-recrimination, overwhelming and shocking. How could he not know what had been done to him? What he had done under the influence of something or someone else? It was just too much. Uhura continued to hold Spock’s hand, her fingers interlacing with his, projecting as much calm as she could into him. He glanced over at her.
*Spock, it’s ok. It’s going to be ok baby; no-one is blaming you. You didn’t know what was happening, you couldn’t know. You need to remain calm now, listen to Surat.* Uhura’s mental voice spoke soothingly through him, the tone gentle almost like bells.
*It is disconcerting to say the least Nyota that I was unaware of my own actions. What have I done? How much information has been obtained through me because of this?* Spock’s mental voice was anguished and Uhura tightened her fingers around his and squeezed gently. Surat’s eyes showed concern and he spared a sideways glance at Prem, who in turn nodded slightly. Surat continued.
“Spock, you were clearly a child when this happened, we again don’t have the particulars, but most of the Vulcan ‘seeded’ appeared to have been children when the ‘seeding’ was initiated, which suggests either at the Bonding time or the time with the Elders, when Vulcan children are assessed on the telepathic level so that they may begin learning to control their abilities.” Surat sighed. “Spock, you cannot blame yourself for this. It is not something that is within your control. We…” Surat swung his arm out to encompass the room. “Will do everything within our powers to find those responsible and help you regain yourself again.”
Prem added. “We will do our best to make sure that you and Cadet Uhura are kept safe. Now, and I’m sorry to cut this short, we need to make plans. Spock and Surat will go to Vulcan. We’re sort of hiding you in the open Spock, as it were. You’re expected at Vulcan anyways, I’m sure that there are already enquiries at the Vulcan Embassy as to when your arrival will be. And as for you Cadet Uhura, Nyota…” Prem stated with a slight smile as he noticed Uhura lean slightly forward towards him. “Unfortunately you will have to stay here at the Academy for the time being. We can’t have you both disappearing at the same time, much too noticeable.” Uhura was frowning at him, about to say something so he quickly continued. “I’m going to stay here and keep my eye on you until we hear from Surat as to our next move, ok?”
“Well what am I supposed to say? Of course it’s not ok, but I have little choice right now do I?” Uhura’s voice was cold. “You’re taking Spock to Vulcan, how do you know that you can protect him there? I’m sorry, but neither of you have given away too much information and while I trust you…” She glanced at Spock, brown velvet eyes meeting soft coffee colored ones, hers softening before she spoke again. “It’s a lot to wrap my head around right now, so no it’s not ok, but that’s the best I can right now. Take it or leave it.” Now it was Spock’s turn to squeeze her hand gently in reassurance.
“Nyota, I can promise that I will do my utmost to protect both you and Spock. I will notify Ambassador Sarek that his son is coming home, I will personally ask him to pick out a security detail for us.” Surat leaned forward to place a hand on Uhura’s shoulder. “And as for you our brave young Cadet, you will have Prem here and we’re going to issue you with a personal transporter, if things should escalate. You’ll need to decide the coordinates to input into it, I suggest you don’t pick somewhere locally, but not too far afield either. When the transporter has been activated it will notify both myself and Prem. We will then initiate secondary protocols to keep you safe.”
“Take it or leave it right?” Uhura smiled at him. “I’m not trying to be difficult, but the Academy really should ramp up its classes on undercover ops. I feel like I’m getting a crash course right now and it’s scaring the crap out of me.” Uhura leaned back down again, her shoulder brushing Spock’s, they were still holding hands.
And now three days had passed, Spock was on his way to Vulcan with Surat, Prem was now a permanent fixture in four of her classes and the personal transporter was clipped to the inside of her uniform, a reminder that this was all real. All too real. Uhura sat in the class, her last of the day and bit her lip trying to concentrate. She felt vulnerable, like everyone was a potential suspect out to get her. Out to get you Ny? She mentally berated herself. You sound like a bad holo-vid show. Now stop it, breathe and deal with it, that’s your motto.
*I admire that greatly about you Nyota, your ability to deal with conflict, to pick yourself up as humans would say, it’s one of the many things I admire.* Spock was teasing her.
*Spock! Jeeze! This is going to take some getting used to!* Uhura mentally smiled at him. *How are you and Surat? I’m not going to ask where you are. But you’re ok aren’t you?*
*We are both well Nyota. Our journey so far has been uneventful. You are well?* His tone became deep and sorrowful. *I know of no way to convey to you how I regret that you have been brought into this.*
* I’m doing fine, though this form of communication will take me a while to get used to. There’s nothing to regret Commander.* Uhura’s tone was serious. *You need to stop blaming yourself. Surat said that it more than likely happened when you were a child, you would have been defenseless. How could you even begin to understand what was happening or even try to fight it? *
*Indeed. Surat has proposed the same thing. We have spoken at great lengths, he is a very complex individual, and I regret that I have allowed my own bigotry of him. He is more than V’tosh Ka’tur. He did not follow that path when he was my father’s attaché. It seems to be a decision that came later for him.*
*Hmm..V’tosh Ka’tur, Vulcans without logic is that how it translates?* Uhura’s tone was perplexed.
*Yes, they are Vulcans who no longer follow Surak’s path, instead they embrace their emotions.*
*Umm…ok. Spock? Can we talk later about it? The bond..I have to ask, you are aware of my thoughts and feelings?* Uhura’s tone held an apology.
*They are like whispers still since we are further away physically, though if I concentrate I can narrow down my focus and contact you like we are doing now.*
*Ok, well sweetie and please don’t take this personally and don’t tell me that Vulcans don’t take things personally because they do..and now I’m rambling..Spock, I’m in class right now and I think... No, I know that I just informed Professor Houghton in Andorian that his mother’s brother’s cousin eats live slime rats!* Uhura’s tone contained both humor and trepidation now. *I think we better ‘hang up’ sweetie, my fault since I should have told you immediately that I was in class.*
*Nyota, you will never have anything to apologize for. Please stay safe.* Spock’s rich tone gently dissipated into a whisper that hummed within Uhura’s mind. She turned back to her class and started to concentrate again.
It was just after 7:00pm that night before Uhura could make her way back to the dorm. Her last class had finished just after 5:00pm and she had made her way tiredly to the cafeteria, gulping down coffee and barely tasting the glazed donut. She could feel the whisper in her mind and she smiled at herself as she felt Spock’s concern that her nutritional needs would definitely not be met with such poor fare. She projected herself licking off the glazed sugar that stuck to her fingers, one by one, almost mentally giggling at the slight embarrassed tone that Spock sent back. She then made her way out of the cafeteria and started to walk towards the Library, her eyes catching another person as they glided by. Prem. He smiled slightly at her and continued to make his way into the cafeteria. They had been passing each other all day like this. Her time at the Library well spent and now she was ready for a hot shower and hopefully a quiet night in, if she could convince Gaila of that. Uhura felt bad, she hadn’t really spoken to Gaila much. The scuttlebutt at the Academy concerning Spock was that he had taken emergency leave due to a family issue. Nothing more forthcoming, but it was enough to keep the rumor mills going. Well if she could convince Gaila to stay in tonight, they could catch up and just chat. Uhura bounced through the dormitory door and decided that tonight she was using the stairs. She had just come through the stairwell door and into her dorm room hallway when it happened. Uhura didn’t have time to react before arms were around her and her lips were muffled by another’s. She felt herself being pushed backwards through the door and back out on the stairwell landing, before she could even begin to formulate what was happening. Uhura finally could step back and found herself staring into the very blue eyes of one Cadet James T. Kirk.
“Kirk! You better have a good reason for….” Uhura couldn’t get her sentence out, Kirk’s hand had shot up and covered it.
“Shhhh..keep it down Uhura!” Kirk whispered frantically. “There are people in your room and it looks like they’re looking for something. They were transported in. I barely got out of there. What the hell is going on?”
“Oh Crap!” Uhura could feel her heart racing, could feel the whisper of the bond, could feel Spock’s concern. She didn’t have time, she could just react. She looked at Kirk quickly, made her decision and tapped the transporter. They both disappeared in a halo of light…..
