Gaming rant nobody cares about

Bill struck a bit of a nerve with me as the Hunter game was wrapping up last night. He was talking about my Adamantine Arrow supplement for Mage: the Awakening, saying that he really didn't like them much. I got a little irritated at that, thinking that he'd only flipped through several pages and reached a hasty conclusion, and he claimed that he ( Read more... )

I don't hate them for not being the old games. What I don't like is White Wolf just rehashed a lot of their old ideas, and to me that's just a huge cop-out. (New Hunter is exempt since old Hunter was so friggin' stupid) Making all new games like Geist or Promethian is a great thing, but just recycling their old ones seems like such a waste to me. :\

And as for Bill, well you know how he writes stuff off without giving it a try ALL the time so his opinions on stuff like that are null and void to me!

See, but do you even know that? Have you actually sat down and read the new books, or is your claim that they just rehashed everything based on an assumption? That's what I'm talking about here. Yes, I am willing to admit that there are things that are the same, but there are many things that are different as well. Different enough that it actually merited a new game - and in the case of Changeling: the Lost, it is very different from the original material, so much so that they honestly could have probably called it something different. Awakening is also substantially changed from Ascension both mechanics-wise and setting-wise, but I so seldom run into oWoD players who are actually willing to give it a chance in the first place before they just go "paradigms are gone, which makes this new Mage automatically stupid and not fun" or "where are my Sons of Ether and their crazy pirate ships that fly in space." It's that sort of attitude about the whole thing that bothers me.

Mage I haven't flipped through, but Vampire I did read through and I just wasn't feeling it. Besides the aforementioned, the other thing that is with me is that I am SO BAD learning systems and RPG worlds, also the thought of having to relearn the games I took 8 years to get down is a huge turn off. It'd be hard for me to disassociate them from each other. So picking up Hunter, Geist, or Promethian would be more to my liking anyway, since I have no basis for them to start with.

Even if the system is dramatically easier to understand? I mean, I think Hunter on the whole has been pretty simple except for when we get into non-standard combat type situations. And even then, the grappling rules didn't take long to get down either.
