This is a combined suggestion post and list of details for The Finley.
Finley Towers: A Backstory:
Finley Towers (named after its original owners, Maude and Chuck Finley) (AKA: The Fin): A twenty-story art deco structure, and a former three-star hotel dating back to the 1920's. The hotel was once a popular resort for the rich (In fact, the Coolidges once stayed there on their way through Dearborn) until it fell on hard times somewhere in the 1980's. Recently refurbished, it's on Dearborn's Register of Historical Buildings - it was, in fact, ready for a grand re-opening as a multipurpose space when the elevators began to mysteriously "malfunction".
After a couple of marauding lions disrupted the swanky opening gala, with the decor slightly ruined (blood'll do that) and some of the fixtures on the fritz (panicking society types will do that, too) the building was put up for purchase by any sucker who was willing to buy it.
And that sucker's name was Ash Williams...
Here's some physical detail:
Facade: I think the outside surface has heavily inlaid paneling, and at least some neon detailing, in dark blue and silver. Otherwise - beyond the twenty floors - I haven't found any imagery that quite suits my mental image of how the building looks, beyond the details of the roof looking as it does in my icon.
Lobby: The lobby's once-ornate interior has been stripped down somewhat - there isn't an oversized chandelier looming over the lobby anymore - but there remains a check-in desk, though it mainly serves as a mail and maintainence desk. At the center of the lobby there is a fountain featuring a statue of
Athena, Greek goddess of war AND peace, holding aloft a laurel branch in one hand and a spear in the other, an overturned urn spilling water into a small fountain that pools at her feet.
In the fountain a flock of ten mallard ducks spend the day paddling about. They're very social, and may bother the residents of the Fin for food (they're actually kept, housed overnights and fed by the owners of the El Shemp next door, via a prior arrangement)
The occasional tourist might be seen taking a picture before the fountain in the lobby. They usually don't hang around for very long, and they're not generally allowed to access the rooms abovestair (Ash tried to run tours of the building; it didn't go well).
There's a round-about sofa and several chairs dotting the spacious lobby. Walking straight ahead, the check-in desk is on your left - kept up purely for formality's sake (behind the desk, there is a mounted
moose's head). Straight ahead is a grand staircase, the infamous glass elevators (two, framing the staircase on each side). On your immediate right is the exit to the pool area, a fire exit and a doorway that leads to the alley the building shares with El Shemp's - the gardens are accessable through this exit and are a short walk around the corner. To the left, there is a service staircase and the exit to the gun range.
Amenities:
The building currently sports an Olympic-sized in-ground swimming pool, accessible by a flight of stairs located at the right rear of the lobby. The pool area also has a hot tub, shower area, and a small water slide and wave pool for the kids.
At the rear of the building - hemmed in by a chain link fence on the southernmost and westernmost property lines and linking the property with El Shemp's - is a formal garden, magnificently appointed and kept, dating back to the early '20s. One can often hear and witness private parties taking place, hosted by El Shemp's.
On the fourth floor, there's a gym with a sauna and weight room.
On the left side of the building, there's a self-contained shooting range with soundproofed walls, open at all times of the night and day.
Apartments,:
All apartments within the Fin have cable and wifi internet access capabilities, but are otherwise bare once your pup moves in. It's up to them to furnish the place to their taste.
There are an unlimited number of rooms, which appear and disappear seemingly at random, whenever needed.
Owner:
The Fin's current legal owner is Ashley J. Williams (
ash--evildead), who bought the building from its previous owner for only two hundred fifty dollars.
Maintenance: While the elevator insists on taking care of things in the oddest of ways, the citizens of The Fin are forced to take care of themselves when it comes to picking up after themselves and home repair. Only the ducks and gardens are automatically cared for, via an agreement Ash has stricken with the owner of El Shemp's. That may mean that things will get a little dusty after a while, but hey, your pup's willing to lend a hand, right?
