"No, I won't tell you what your present is," Samantha says, chuckling into the phone. "If I told you now, you wouldn't be surprised, would you? All right, then. Keep on being a good boy. She stares at the stairwell for a good minute before shrugging and punching the button marked "lobby" on the right side of the elevator bank. There is a loud ding, and the lights in the lobby flicker.
When the doors open abruptly and an unfamiliar woman emerges into the light, she gasps.

"Dist ye hope to reach the pool? Or the gardens? Ye must turn left for the gardens. Left for the pool as well, and down stairs. If ye wish to reach another location in Dearborn, I fear ye must inquire of another, for I only...arrived here recently."

Samantha finds herself falling a yard to the ground. No, not ground. Floor. From inside a car to--where?
She looks around at the unfamiliar four walls. "Whoever's doing this," she says in a voice that only trembles a little bit, "it's not funny."
Cautiously she gets to her feet, then makes her way to the window to peer outside.
Across the street is Fiona's silver Jetta. Parked exactly where she'd started this all-too-short trip.

In the face of irrationality and illogic, she takes the elevator back down to the lobby, leaning against the mirrored walls each in turn, eyes closed, silently begging whatever powers are listening to take her back, let her go, let her son not grow up without a mother, let him know that while Mommy lies at the drop of a wallet to everyone else in the world she will not lie to him, that she will come get him when she promised, that she will make sure he's safe, that she will take care of him and love him forever.
But when she opens her eyes, the elevator door is open, showing her the lobby of the Fin, where Fiona and Sheila wait.

Discontent is written across her face as she watches the open elevator.

At last she speaks. "You ... said something about a courtesy phone?" she asks Sheila. "Is there any way I can use it to call my son?"

Samantha may be duplicitous, but she's clearly telling the truth about her son.
