They’re up in Canada, a place once considered a mutants haven, when the riots get so bad in the city of Vancouver that the police start enforcing curfews. Human and mutants alike are forced to remain in their homes after 9pm and the streets are swarming with police and military vehicles.
A new law is being brought it that enforces both humans and mutants to hold ID cards. For the last four years only the mutants have had to carry them but Canada is the first place to demand that everyone is treated like an equal.
Rogue and Ric were here to meet with members of the “group” and discuss how things are progressing. To see what the impacts of the new law will be and lend a helping hand if required. When the shit hit the fan though, Ric and Rogue pulled back, retreating to the safety of their hotel and keeping their heads down. Probably helped that Raven had threatened to come up there and kick Ric’s ass if he didn’t keep Rogue safe.
And Ric is shit scared of Rogue’s Mommas.
A week of restrictions finally results in a massive clash between protesters, mutants, the police and the army and someone; somewhere manages to cut the power across the city. One minute they are sat in their hotel room, curled up on the bed together watching the news and trying to ignore the chaos on the streets outside their window and the next they are sat in the dark. It’s one in the morning and sleep isn’t coming any time soon.
“Fuck.”
“Think y’all got a generator?”
“Probably.” The minutes tick by and still nothing happens; peering out the window it’s apparent that the entire city has been plunged into darkness and the only light is that from the flashing blue and red patrol car lights. However the darkness seems to have brought a sudden calm across the city, rioters falling silent and still.
Heading out into the hallway Ric holds onto Rogue’s gloved hand, shining his torch ahead of them and leading her towards the staircase. Rather than going down though Ric leads her up and they finally bust the fire door open with a gentle nudge of Rogue’s strength. From up here the city is bathed in the unearthly light from the moon, it’s so bright though it could almost be daylight. Down on the streets below people are gathering, lighters and torches shared amongst groups as they talk, chat and laugh.
Such a startling contrast to the anger and violence that it doesn’t quite seem real.
“Come on, Ah wanna take a look from higher up.” Grabbing Ric’s hand Rogue guides them up into the night sky, they haven’t been able to do this since arriving in Vancouver because the anti-mutant protestors have been shooting mutants on sight. It’s been a horribly bloody and terrible time so the treat of being able to go flying is too hard to resist.
Rogue flies up over the city, holding onto Ric who keeps his arms firmly around Rogue’s waist. He’s not stupid enough to even pretend to dare to let go. Finally after an hour of flying around they end up above Cypress Mountain, just as they start to head down to land the power switches back on and the
sight is simply breath taking. From their spot up on the mountain, feet now firmly on solid ground, they have a stunning view of Vancouver; skyscrapers shrouded in fog and the lights make the fog seem like water. There are patches there you can see the city streets and their homes in grids and then others where the fog is illuminated from underneath turning it yellow with burning embers in a fire. The skyscrapers that break above the fog are just stunning and it’s one of those moments where you just had to be there to appreciate it.
“Power’s back on then.” Ric quips after a few moments of silence.
“Yeah... yeah Ah think it might well be ya dolt.” She laughs softly, bumping into Ric with her shoulder and rolling her eyes. “Wanna go back?”
“Nah. I’m good here for a little longer.” Ric turns his head, gaze still settled on the city as he presses a kiss to the side of Rogue’s head. They stay there watching over the city until the sun starts to rise and they watch the way the sky changes colour. Again they are treated to a
sight that they would never have discovered if it hadn't been for the power cut. With a soft, contented sigh Ric barely conceals the yawn which catches him by surprise. Blinking slowly and lazily he gestures towards the city. "Okay. I think I'm ready to crash out till lunch."
"An' here Ah was thinking you could handle your late nights hmmm?"
"Hush you and hurry up with the flying routine already Ruby."
