Summary: Senator Fred Lehne has been brutally attacking, raping, and murdering young men for over a decade, but always evades arrest thanks to his money and power. He has everyone fooled, except one team of detectives headed by Captain Jeffrey Dean Morgan and his protege Jensen Ackles. When things become worse, Morgan goes to FBI agents Misha Collins and Jim Beaver for help. They offer it in the form of Jared Padalecki, hotshot profiler who also happens to be Jensen's boyfriend. But there is more Jared...he also happens to be the only surviving victim of Lehne's...
Sadie licked at Jared’s pale cheeks while Harley shifted restlessly beside him. They’d been sitting in the floor for nearly an hour now. The sun had set, allowing dusk to settle around them outside. Jared finally lifted his head from his hands and took in a shuddering breath. He had to pull himself together. He still had a job to do…
He ran his hand through his hair and noticed the dogs at his side. They both whimpered at him. “Hey guys,” he said shakily, his voice hoarse and cracking. He scratched at both of their heads and glanced out the window across from him. Harley whined again and nudged at his arm.
“Shit,” he cursed as he took note of the time. “I’m sorry buddy.” He had completely forgotten to take the dogs out for a walk with everything that had gone on today. Misha had shown up more or less at the crack of dawn to talk about yesterday’s unfortunate lunch date with Lehne. Jensen had of course left to go to Chris’s. Jared wasn’t blind…he knew he’d been pushing Jensen away. He couldn’t help it. It was just how he seemed to cope when things got too much. He’d always been that way, no matter how hard Sam tried to get him to stop. It looked like he’d succeeded in shoving yet another guy out of his life.
He tried to push the thoughts out of his mind and get back to what he needed to do. He’d neglected the dogs and now they had to witness their daddies fight. With a sigh, Jared pulled himself up from the wall. His leg almost buckled underneath him and protested greatly from being in that cramped position for so long. Eventually he was able to stand up on his own and walk over to the basket near the door. He rummaged through the dog toys for a moment until he found their two leashes and a few tennis balls.
“You two wanna go to the park?” he asked, trying to sound energetic. The dogs thankfully didn’t notice his somber mood and wagged their tails excitedly at the mention of their favorite place. “Come here then.” Harley bounded over to him, followed seconds later by Sadie. He hooked their leashes to their collars. He opened the closet near the door to grab a sweatshirt. He hands settled on the first one on the rack. It was the same hoodie he had worn the day he had first met Jensen. It had holes in the sleeves so that he could push his thumbs through it now and some of the color had fade. It was his favorite…
With another sigh and a few tears, he pulled it on over his head. “Let’s get outta here,” he called to the dogs. They let him pick up their leashes before they started walking towards the door. He shut and locked up behind him, stowing the keys in his jean pocket. The tennis balls rolled against his stomach in the hoodie’s front pocket with each step. The walk wasn’t long and he neared the park after a few minutes. He was thankful…it at least gave his mind less time to wander back to the events from earlier.
Sadie barked and licked at his hand; it helped to ground him. “You guys wanna play?” They both barked in unison, causing him to laugh for the first time that day. “I’ll take that as a yes.” He leaned against a nearby tree with his cane resting against his leg. He unhooked both of his babies from their leashes and dug into his pocket for the tennis balls. The dogs waiting patiently with their tails wagging away. Jared tossed two balls back to back for Harley and Sadie to run after. The lunged and yipped as they chased them down.
Jared became lost in the repetitive nature of it all. The dogs would proudly return with the slobber-covered ball in mouth to hand over to Jared. He would through it back out and start it all over again. He smiled as his babies played and barked happily. The events from the past couple of weeks refused to melt away, but he was able to at least enjoy this.
He slid down the tree trunk and stretched his bad leg out in front of him in the damp grass. The dew settled against his jeans, but he didn’t really pay it much mind. He slipped out of his hoodie and laid it down on the ground beside him. He was desperately trying to relax for just a moment. Tomorrow, everything would come slamming back onto him. He would have to meet up with Lehne again. This time, the senator had requested he come by his office to come up with some new activities and gimmicks for the center. It was going to be the first time Jared would be completely closed off with the bastard. He’d done his best to choose public places for their meetings and “work dates” as Lehne liked to call them.
Sadie laid her head in his lap, as if sensing his thoughts. “Hey sweetie.” She whined back at him. “I’m ok.” She huffed, showing her disbelief. “Fine, I’m not…” She burrowed into him more and twisted to look up at him. “But I will be…once all this is over. I promise.” He kissed her on the top of her furry head and rubbed her stomach. Harley barked to the side, trying to get his attention. “Sorry buddy,” Jared laughed. “Bring it here.” The bigger dog brought his toy back over to Jared. Jared pushed Sadie back up and started playing once more.
He let himself become carried away by the simplicity of it all. Time passed by and it became darker. The lights surrounding the park slowly started clicking on to make up for it. But they did little to illuminate the large van lurking in the back of the parking lot…

Jensen downed his beer and stood to go grab another. He walked into the kitchen and rummaged through Chris and Alona’s fridge until he found the desired bottles. The glass was cool on his hand as he reached for the bottle opener. He was about to pop the cap off when the coolness was suddenly gone from his palm.
“Hey!” he squeaked in surprise.
Alona had come up behind him and snatched the beer away from her cousin. She stood at the counter sipping at it herself while she fixed him with a look. “I think you can do without one, Jen.”
“Don’t start, Al! I’m not drunk so just-“
“You keep it up and ya will be. Jared don’t need that right now.”
“Jared apparently doesn’t need me period! So why don’t you just stop right there, girl.”
“Oh! Come off it Jen! You can be such a self-righteous prick! You know that?!?”
“What are you talking about?!?” Jensen glared right back at her. “I’m just telling you the truth. He doesn’t need me to talk to or be with. So I don’t get why-“
“You don’t know the whole story so-“
“Whose fault is that?” Jensen snapped. “It sure as hell ain’t mine, sweetheart.”
“If you would’ve stuck around you couldn’t found out, dumbass,” she quipped. “But no, you ran for cover. I’m sure that helped everything so damn much.”
“You weren’t there, Al! You didn’t-“
“No, but I know you both pretty well. So don’t-“
The doorbell brought a halt to their arguing. Alona sighed and went to answer it. She shoved past Jensen, knocking him into the counter as she went. Jensen just stayed in the kitchen. He ran his hand through his hair and closed his eyes against the forming heading building behind his eyes. It had been a really shitty day…
“Jensen! Get your ass in here!” Alona yelled from the other room.
It looked like his night was about to get even shittier…
He reluctantly made his way towards the front door. He rounded the corner and stopped dead in his tracks. Misha was standing just inside of the door, looking just as wrung out and exhausted as Jensen surely did.
Yep…definitely getting shittier.
“What do you want?” Jensen barked at the FBI agent.
“Jensen, I’m not here to start an argument.” Misha held his hands up in surrender. “I just wanted to come by and explain myself to you.”
The words caused Jensen to bristle and his hands to clench at his sides. “Explain yourself to me? What the hell is there to explain? Jared obviously trusts you more than me and-OW!!!”
Somewhere along the way, Alona had moved from the door and towards Jensen. He had reached up and pinched his ear in a death grip between her polished nails. She was squeezing hard and pinching at the tender flesh.
“OW! Son of bitch, Al!! Let me go!!” He tried to shrug away from her touch, but it didn’t work. All he managed to do was fall to his knees. Even that didn’t cause her to relinquish her hold on him. “Stop!” he whined.
“You gonna place nice?” Alona asked. “I’m getting sick of this bullshit, Jen.”
“Ow…you…God…fine!! I’ll listen to the bastard.” She sighed and applied more pressure. “Damn!! Sorry!! I’ll…I’ll listen to him! Just stop!”
“Fine,” she replied as she let him go. He fell the rest of the to the floor and panted through the pain. He reached up to rub at his ear before glaring at her. “I’ll be in the next room. I’ll be able to hear you. Just remember that.” With that she walked back out of the hallway.
“Damn,” Misha breathed out. He reached down and hauled Jensen back up to his feet.
“Shit,” Jensen mumbled, still rubbing at his ear. He pulled away from Misha the second he got his balance. “What do you want, Collins?”
“I just wanted to talk to you.”
“So talk…let’s get this over with.” Jensen could hear Alona grumbling on the other side of the wall, but he tried to ignore it.
“First of all,” Misha started, shuffling on his feet nervously, “Jared never told me about Lehne.”
“What?” Jensen asked in disbelief.
“Well,” Misha sighed. He leaned against the table near the door. “You see, when he was first brought on the team, I didn’t trust him. I thought he was too young to be put with our division and I didn’t like it. So, I went looking through his files. I wanted to make sure he was for real. I mean, Jim was vouching for him like crazy. But I thought he must’ve been related to the kid or something. I didn’t know at the time.”
“So…”
“So…I accidentally found myself unlocking sealed files. I read about the case and about Jared’s involvement at the time. Jim had sealed all the records for Jared’s safety. He was a minor at the time and given the high profile that Lehne is…”
“Makes sense,” Jensen mumbled.
“Exactly…but I didn’t know it ‘til it was too late.” Misha ran a hand through his hair. “Jim hit the roof when he found out. Made me talk to Jared about it. I had to make sure the kid understood that it was a mistake and that the files were buried deeper now because of it. Jared should’ve wanted to punch me…but the kid understood.”
“Jared’s never hated you. That seems to be the problem now,” Jensen grumbled.
“What are you talking about?”
“You two,” Jensen said as if it was obvious.
“Um…what??” Misha’s brows knitted together almost comically.
“You two…you’ve got feelings or whatever for him. You always have…”
“Not sure I follow you but-“
“Don’t,” Jensen raged. “You’ve always loved Jared! Don’t act like you don’t!”
“Of course I love him,” Misha calmly admitted. “But not the way you do. He’s like my little brother. Has been since I found out all that shit happened to him.”
“Don’t lie to me! You’ve had a thing for Jare forever. And it looks like you’re finally getting your way. So I guess-“
Misha shoved his iPhone in front of Jensen’s face. On the main screen, a young lady was smiling up at him. She had dark hair falling in curls around her face and Jensen recognized her instantly. “Gen?”
“Yep…”
“She runs the coffee shop…”
“Uh huh and she’s been dating me for six months now dumbass…”
“What?”
Misha huffed a laugh at Jensen. “Jared helped set us up. We’ve been dating ever since…”
“So,” Jensen said incredulously, “ you don’t have a thing for Jared?”
“He’s missing a few key features for my taste up top and has a few extras at the bottom…”
“Oh God!” Jensen looked like he was going to be sick. “And I…I…oh God!”
Misha reached over and rubbed at Jensen’s back. “Deep breaths buddy! That’s it. You’re gonna hyperventilate if you keep this up.” Jensen slowly started to calm down. “Better?”
“What the hell did I do?” Jensen brokenly questioned. “I basically accused Jared of cheating on me and…”
“Stop…you know Jared loves you. He’ll forgive you, asshole. Just don’t do it again. You do, and I’ll kick your ass eight ways to Sunday.”
Jensen raised an eyebrow at Misha.
“I may not have any clue what that saying means…but I can kick your ass and I will if you hurt him again.”
Jensen sniffled slightly and nodded.
“Good…now get your ass outta here and back to your boy. He’s gonna need you. Tomorrow is gonna suck balls for him.”
Jensen smiled his thanks to Misha and turned around to grab his coat. He yelled a good bye and thanks to Alona and Chris before heading out into the night air. The Impala was thankfully still in the driveway from earlier. He hopped in the front seat and threw it into gear. He peeled out of the driveway and sped off towards his house. He had no idea what would await him once he got there…
*********
Pretty much everyone had left the park and the moon had settled overhead. The dogs were still enjoying their time out, so he let them run about freely. The air had grown a lot cooler, causing Jared to reach for his sweatshirt once again. His hand settled on the fabric, but he never had the chance to pull it on over his head. The worn cotton fell from his grasp as he was pulled backwards. His back connected with another person and something snaked around to the front of his mouth.
“MMMM,” Jared tried to shout around whatever it was.
“Shhh…I wouldn’t struggle if I was you,” a terrifyingly familiar voice whispered into his ear. “You know how much I hate it.”
Fear ran up Jared’s spine and he bucked against the hold. He had to get away...he had to get away from Lehne.
The senator managed to hold tight to Jared, but his hand slipped a little from Jared’s face, giving Jared access to the flesh. Jared took the opportunity and bit down hard on Lehne’s hand.
“Son of bitch!” Lehne barked, jerking away from Jared.
Jared spit blood out of his mouth and whistled for his dogs. He had to get out NOW, but he couldn’t leave them. He scrambled to regain his balance, forgetting his cane in the process. His mind just screamed for him to move…to get away.
His head felt heavy and he tripped over his feet in his rush. It caused his head to ache and swim. “What the hell?” he slurred. He pushed himself up in the dampened grass, but his vision blurred out for a moment. When it came back, he saw a cloth sitting off to the side of Lehne. “Shit…”
Lehne must have recovered from the throbbing pain in his hand because he was now advancing on Jared again. His eyes bore holes into the younger man, causing Jared to shiver slightly. He tried to get up on his own one last time, but he couldn’t. All he could do was trace Lehne’s movements with his blurry eyes. The psychopath reached down and picked up the discarded cloth.
“Chloroform…always does the trick,” he smirked. “But you already knew that didn’t you, Jared?”
Jared gulped. “How…”
“Had a little help, but once I knew your real name, it wasn’t too hard to put together. You’ve changed a lot though…that definitely threw me.” When Lehne reached Jared, he knelt down, picking up Jared’s face in his hands. “I looked a very long time for you, boy.”
Jared steeled himself and did his best to glare back at Lehne. “Not very well,” he muttered.
“You little bitch!” Lehne threw Jared down to the ground and kicked at his side. “You don’t know what you’re missing! You would’ve-“
Lehne was cut off from whatever maniacal ramblings he was about to spout off when the Sadie suddenly lunged at the bastard. She sunk her sharp incisors into the flesh at his arm and shook her head to pull at the new forming wound. She growled at the man who was hurting her Jared. He howled in pain as she sunk her teeth in harder.
“GAH!” Lehne screamed. He managed to twist away from Sadie, but she took a chunk of flesh out of his arm in the process. Sadie tried to run back at him again, but Lehne got his leg up and hit her square in her chest.
“No!” Jared called out as he tried to push himself up. It was useless. While he may not have gotten full exposure to the chloroform, he was feeling the effects of the drug.
Harley lumbered up at the sound of Sadie whimpering. He bared his own teeth at Lehne before attacking the senator as well. His larger build easily knocked the senator to the ground. He sank his massive mouth around Lehne’s leg, biting through to the bone. Lehne once again cried in pain and tried to get away from the dog. Sadie joined back in once she had caught her breath. The senator had a hard time trying to fight them off. Their normally sleek coats were now matted with a combination of his blood and a little of their own.
After a few moments, Lehne wrapped his hand around a nearby tree branch. He swung it as hard as he could and hit at the two dogs. They both let go of the man and scampered back a few feet from him. Sadie recovered quickly though and went to go at him again. Lehne, who was now sitting up more in the grass, reared back with the branch and caught her on her side. She fell to the ground with a pain filled yip that broke Jared’s heart.
Harley whined as he saw her fall and backed away from the danger. He kept his teeth shown and wedged himself between Lehne and Jared. He sent a few pitiful looks at Sadie, yet managed to stay menacing towards Lehne.
“I’d call of your guard dogs if you want them to live, Jared,” Lehne ordered.
Jared let a few tears slide down his face. He was still sprawled out on the ground, but he got his arm to finally cooperate. He stroked at Harley’s hind legs in a soothing motion. “Go on buddy,” he rasped, his throat clogging with emotions. “Ya did good, Harley…you’re a good boy. Go to Sadie!” Harley whined and turned to face Jared. “Go,” Jared said around a few more tears. The big dog moved closer to his master and licked at his face, lapping at the tears that started to course down Jared’s cheeks. “Go on!” He shoved Harley towards Sadie and the dog reluctantly went.
“Good boy,” Lehne said to Jared, using the exact words he had said to Harley against him. “Don’t you follow orders so nicely. Then again, you are my little bitch…aren’t you Jay?”
“I sure as hell don’t belong to you,” Jared said around tears.
Lehne took the branch and struck Jared on his bad leg. Jared cried out, but didn’t say anything else. Talking wasn’t going to get him anywhere…not now at least.
“You will…by the end of the night…you’ll be all mine. Just like you should’ve been all those years ago.” Lehne walked over and grabbed Jared by the hair. “We’re gonna have so much fun…”
*********
Jensen pulled into their driveway and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw only Jared’s SUV sitting in front of their house. The porch light illuminated the front lawn, but the house looked completely dark other than that. Jensen ran up to the door and unlocked it quicker than he ever had before.
“Jared? Hey!” Jensen called into their home once he was inside. He ran up the stairs and glanced in their bedroom and Jared’s office. Both were completely empty. Jensen rushed back down the stairs, nearly tripping in his rush. But he found the first floor uninhabited as well. As he walked back into their living room, he realized the dogs weren’t running around either.
Jensen made his way back to the door and searched the dog’s basket for their leashes. Relief once again flooded him when he realized they were both gone.
“Must’ve gone to the park,” Jensen thought aloud. A quick glance to the table they normally threw their keys on further sealed the idea for Jensen. Jared’s keys were missing from their normal spot. With another sigh, Jensen grabbed his own set again and headed back out towards the Impala.
The drive to their park only took a few seconds. Jensen drove around and scanned the benches and trees for any sign of Jared or the dogs. He couldn’t see either.
After driving for a few seconds, he pulled into the parking lot and dug into his coat for his cell phone. He punched in the keys quickly.
“Hey you’ve reached Jared…sorry I’m not able to answer. Just leave me a message and I’ll call you when I can. Thanks!”
“Shit…Jay.” Jensen dialed another number. “Hey Sherry! It’s Jen…I was wondering if Jared was with you all?”
“No baby, he’s not. I’ve got Meg and Jeff here. I thought you’d be with Jared…”
“We…uh…had a fight. I thought maybe he’d walked to your place. Must be at the park with the mutts…”
“Probably is. You know how he loves to be with them. And I’m sure you boys will work things out…you always do, sugar.”
“Thanks,” Jensen said before disconnecting the call. His hand hovered over Chad’s number when he caught movement out of the corner of his eye. He tore his gaze away from the cell and looked a little closer. He could see something moving a little in the grass off to the edge of the park, near the wooded area that lay behind it. Jensen’s brow knit in confusion. He clicked his phone back to the main menu and climbed out of the Impala. He made sure his gun and badge were secured in his jacket before he made his way towards whatever was on the other side of the park.
As he got closer, he could hear soft whimpers and moans coming from the grass. He made him put his hand to his gun and pick up his speed. What awaited him was not what he expected.
“No,” he gasped as his eyes finally fell on Harley and Sadie in the grass. Harley growled but quickly stopped when he realized it was Jensen. The big mutt jumped up and lumbered over towards Jensen. He whined and licked at Jensen’s hand before grabbing onto the loose fabric of Jensen’s coat with his teeth. He pulled until Jensen started to follow him towards Sadie. “Oh God…”
Sadie was lying in the grass with her head down on top of her front paws. She had blotches of blood all over her. Now that Jensen took a better look at Harley, he noticed the mutt did as well. Jensen sank to his knees next to the dog. She whimpered as he touched at her bruised side.
“I’m sorry sweetheart,” he soothed. He ran his hand up and down her torso, checking for wounds that would equal this amount of blood. But he came away with nothing. His stomach dropped at the implication. The blood had to belong to someone else. “God…”
Jensen’s eyes darted around the small section of the park. His heart sank when he noticed spots of blood amongst the grass. Seconds later, he felt like he was going to be sick when he saw Jared’s sweatshirt and cane lying near the tree. He’s been telling himself that Jared was safe at a friend’s house and that the dogs had gotten out on their own. He knew he was lying to himself, but it had quelled the panic. Now, he felt as if his whole world was turning upside down and falling apart at the seams.
Jensen grabbed the sweatshirt and started searching for more signs of Jared. A few feet from the sweatshirt lay what looked like a washcloth. Jensen searched his pockets and was happy to note he had some gloves left from the last crime scene investigation still tucked away there. He slipped one on and picked up the cloth. It was soaked with something. “Shit,” Jensen mumbled after he took a whiff. The scent of chloroform was heavy on the fabric. He set it back down on the ground and stood up.
After another scan he saw something strange a few feet ahead of him. A small branch was sticking out of the soft ground. The top piece of it was bent at an angle. It wasn’t like it was unusual to have stick around the park, but this one seemed odd. It looked like someone had deliberately put it into the ground. When Jensen approached the spot, he saw a few patches of blood. He also was able to see that the stick point towards the parking lot.
Jensen took off towards the other parking lot. “No!” he raged in frustration. He saw tire tracks but nothing else that would be much use. He was about to run back to the dogs when his foot hit at something on the ground. “What the…”
Jensen knelt down and picked up the iPhone he had hit a moment before with his foot. It was Jared’s…he easily recognized the beat up case. “Jay,” Jensen said brokenly. When he unlocked the screen, it popped up to the video feature of the device. It showed a new clip, taken earlier that night. Jensen’s hand shook as he clicked on the video.
“Jared…”
A slightly bruised Jared came onto the screen. It looked like he was being dragged through the grass. Muffled sounds were in the background, but for the most part it was hard to make out. After a few seconds, Lehne came onto the screen. He was bloody, far bloodier than Jared seemed to be at the time. He was talking to Jared, but it was still hard to make out what exactly he was saying. Jensen knew he could have it analyzed but all he could focus on right now was Jared…being dragged away by Lehne…
The video shut off not long after that when it appeared to have been dropped to the pavement. Jensen’s heart sank with it…
He quickly dug out his own cellphone and dialed a number he rarely used. “Misha! Lehne…he has Jared!”
