Summary: Senator Fred Lehne has been brutally attacking, raping, and murdering young men for over a decade, but always evades arrest thanks to his money and power. He has everyone fooled, except one team of detectives headed by Captain Jeffrey Dean Morgan and his protege Jensen Ackles. When things become worse, Morgan goes to FBI agents Misha Collins and Jim Beaver for help. They offer it in the form of Jared Padalecki, hotshot profiler who also happens to be Jensen's boyfriend. But there is more to Jared...he also happens to be the only surviving victim of Lehne's...
Jensen stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his tie so that it was just right. He had to look professional today. It was a big day after all. Today was the first day of the trial. The one that would put him in the same room as the bastard that had tortured the person he loved the most. Today was the day he’d be face to face with Lehne.
He let go of his tie and ran a hand over his face before turning back towards the bed. Jared was starting to move a little under the covers. He had black circles under his closed eyes, giving him an exhausted look. His movements were sluggish and stiff. The news flickered on the TV in the background, droning on about the impending case. Jared had been watching it, but he must have finally succumbed to sleep again. Sadie was lying at his feet, watching Jensen with her tail wagging a little as he approached.
Jensen quickly scratched behind her ears, ignoring the newscaster going on about Lehne’s accomplishments and supposed crimes. Jensen then reached over to run his hand through Jared’s messy hair. His boyfriend blinked up at him and gave him a watery smile. “M’ning,” he mumbled sleepily. He winced as he stretched his sore and tight muscles.
“Morning…how ya feelin’ Jare?”
Jared closed his eyes again as his body made all the aches and pains known. “Been better,” he said through clenched teeth. “Damn PT…forgot how much it sucks…”
“I know it buddy. Just take it easy today, huh? Get some more rest and take some more pills. Just stay in bed and-“
“I’ll be fine, Jen.”
“I know…just hate you spending the day alone while I’m at the trial.”
“I’ll be fine,” Jared repeated, trying to smile. “I’m just going to crash on the couch for the day and catch up on some work so-“
“You shouldn’t work. You’re exhausted. You barely slept last night and-“
“And I’m testifying in a few days, Jen. I can’t afford to not be prepared going into it. We can’t lose this. I can’t…”
“Shh,” Jensen soothed, running a hand through Jared hair once more. “You’ll be ok, babe. I get that you want to be prepared but you gotta get some rest too. That’s all I’m asking. I don’t like leaving you alone while I go to the courthouse.”
“I know. I just…I don’t think I can go yet.”
“I don’t want you to have to go to it at all,” Jensen quietly admitted.
“I know…but I have to.” Jared took Jensen’s hand in his. “And so do you. So you had better get going. I’ll be fine. I’m going to get some more sleep and then go over everything some more.”
“Wait up for me?” Jensen asked, looking sad.
“Of course.” Jared leaned up and kissed his boyfriend on the lips. “Good luck. And ignore whatever he says to you. It doesn’t matter.”
“I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Jensen gave Jared one last kiss and then proceeded to cover Jared back up with the blankets. He pulled them back over Jared’s head.
“Jen,” Jared laughed. “Stop! I get it! I’ll get some rest.”
“Thank you.” Jensen smiled and clicked off the TV, not wanting Jared to have to see Lehne on the news all morning long. “I’ll be back later.” With that, Jensen headed out towards the Impala.
Once Jared heard the familiar rumble of the car, he reached over to the nightstand for the remote. Sadie whined from her spot at his feet before crawling up towards him. She was mostly healed, but her movements were still stiff. He clicked the news back on and turned up the volume a little. He snuggled down into pillows and pulled his baby close to him.
*********
The steps leading up to the courthouse were littered with all kinds of broadcasting equipment and reporters. Jensen groaned as they all approached him, yelling out questions about his connection to the case and opinions. He did his best to ignore it all and just get inside the building. It wasn’t much better in there though.
“Son of a bitch,” Jensen cursed under his breath as he finally found his way to the metal detectors. He emptied a few coins and his money clip out into the tray before setting his badge beside them. His hand ached to search for his firearm, but he had decided to leave it at home. He couldn’t risk giving in to any temptation of shooting Lehne in the courtroom…and he was pretty damn sure there would be so many.
“Where’s Jay?” Steve the guard asked as he handed Jensen he things back.
“He doesn’t testify for awhile, so he decided to stay home. Didn’t want to have to deal with all the chaos just yet. Can’t blame him.” Jensen sent Steve a sad smile.
“How’s he doin’?”
“Has his good days and bad. But much better than he was. He’s getting there.”
“Good, give the kid my best.” Steve clapped Jensen on the shoulder before turning to the next person.
With a sigh, Jensen headed towards the courtroom to take his seat. A few people were already sitting in the wooden benches. He recognized a few as parents to some of the other victims. Jared’s parents hadn’t shown. Much like Jared, they hadn’t wanted to until absolutely necessary. The parents who had shown looked either terrified or determined.
Jensen approached the front where the prosecution team was busy preparing. He leaned over the front gate and clapped DA Sebastian Roche on the shoulder.
“Hey kid,” Sebastian said as he turned to Jensen. “You ready to nail this bloody bastard to the wall?”
“Would me nice,” Jensen sighed, running his hand tiredly down his face. “You ready for all this?”
“Shit’s gonna hit the fan.”
“Hasn’t it already?” Jensen waved his hand towards the new crews and various journalists outside the window.
“You have a point,” Sebastian replied. “And it’s only going to get worse.” He looked Jensen up and down, taking in the worn expression on his face. “Jared have a rough night?”
“Yeah…he started physical therapy and it’s taking its toll. This isn’t helping him much either.”
“Imagine so. We’ll get this taken care of, Jen.” The normally mocking and fun tone was gone from Sebastian’s voice. Jensen knew he was one of the best out there and that he’d do everything within his power to win this case for Jared and all the others like him.
“Thanks,” Jensen said, smiling a little at the older man. He was about to open his mouth again when the defense team started to pour into the room, Kurt Fuller in the lead. Behind him, Lehne stood with an officer at his side. He wasn’t cuffed, but the officer had a firm grip on his arm. Jensen couldn’t take his eyes off the senator as the man rounded the table and took his seat.
Lehne noticed Jensen, instantly recognizing him as Jared’s detective boyfriend. His eyes narrowed as his gaze met Jensen’s. Kurt was busy going over details in a hushed voice towards his hear, but Lehne wasn’t really listening. He nodded occasionally to make it seem as if he was. But his focus was on Jensen, and Jensen knew it. He did his best not to give Lehne any satisfaction with how much it was bothering him. It wasn’t easy…especially when Lehne started smiling.
Jensen’s hands clenched into fists at his side. He wanted nothing more than to go over there and rip him limb from limb. His feet twitched to take that step over towards the defense team’s table. He probably would have if the judge hadn’t chosen that moment to take her spot on the bench.
“Everyone please be seated and ready…court will be in session in five minutes,” Judge Loretta Devine called out in a no-nonsense voice. Her eyes flickered towards Lehne and then to Jensen before she settled into her seat and flipped through some files.
Lehne’s smiled widened as he quirked an eyebrow at Jensen.
“Jen,” Misha whispered in his hear, “let’s go back here. Come on, man.” Misha pulled a little on Jensen arm and finally got him to move to a seat in the second row. Misha’s hand never left his shoulder; it was a welcome weight throughout the judge’s introduction.
“Mr. Roche,” Loretta finally stated, “please start your opening statement for the court.”
“Yes your honor,” Sebastian replied. He stood and began working the room, approaching the jury and turning towards Lehne with a serious look. “The man you see before you has been charged with kidnapping, torturing, and brutally murdering…”
All the words blurred together for Jensen. He still had trouble processing that this had all happened to Jared. He’d always known Lehne was a sadistic bastard, but it had been easier to deal with when it was strangers and names on a report. Now he had a face…
“The state will prove to you people that this man is not the respectable politician he would like you to believe,” Sebastian continued. “No, this man is anything but. He’s has been accused of one of the most heinous acts I have ever seen cross my desk. As I will show the court, Frederic Lehne is guilty on all charges.”
For the first time since he’d arrived in the court, Lehne looked shaken and angry. His body sat rigidly in the wooden chair, hands gripping the table tightly.
And so it began…
*********
Jeff quietly unlocked the front door to Jared’s house. Jensen had warmed him that Jared hadn’t slept much the night before, and he really didn’t want to wake him up if he didn’t have to. Harley greeted him with his tail wagging happily.
“Hey buddy,” Jeff whispered as he crept into the house. He heard the TV on, the noise coming in through the hallway across from the den. Jeff scratched Harley behind the ears and walked off towards the back of the house.
“Today marks day one in the highly anticipated trial accused Texas senator Frederic Lehne. He’s been accused of…”
Jeff ignored the droning of the news anchor and instead focused on his baby brother. Jared was lying on the large couch and nearly curled into a ball. His forehead had a fine sheen of sweat covering it and he was shifting anxiously underneath the fleece blanket Lisa had made for him last year. Jensen’s hoodie was bunched up around his neck where he’d moved so much in his sleep. He moaned and curled up tighter, trembling.
Jared was having a nightmare. Jeff remembered them all too well from the first time Lehne had tortured Jay. Jared mumbled him his sleep again, making Sadie whine from her place at his feet. She turned towards Jeff with big eyes and whined again.
“I know, sweetheart.” Jeff ran his hand down her back before moving his hand to his brother’s. He rubbed soothing circles across Jared’s shoulder blades and then settled his hand at the back of Jared’s neck. He squeezed gently. “Jay? Wake up bub.”
“Mmmm,” Jared groaned, twisting in his sleep once more. The nightmare still had a firm grip on him.
“Come on kiddo. Don’t do this to me.” Jeff ran his fingers through Jared’s hair. “Please Jare. Wake up!”
“Guh!” Jared woke with a start and sat up quickly. His side and chest protested the movement, causing him to wince as the pain shot through him. His eyes darted around the room, trying desperately to orient himself.
“Shh…you’re ok, bub,” Jeff soothed. He never moved his hand from Jared’s shoulder. “You’re ok. I’m here. You’re safe, kiddo.”
“J-Jeff?” Jared stuttered with wide eyes. “I-“
“Deep breath buddy. You’re ok. Everything’s ok, Jare.” Jeff slumped down onto the couch beside his baby brother and pulled him close. “It’s ok.” Jared leaned into his side and tried to catch his breath. Jeff’s spelled of baby lotion and cologne. The combination helped to ground him back into the present and not in the confines of the hellish nightmare from minutes ago.
After a few moments, Jared breathed a shaky sigh of relief. “Thanks, Jeff.”
“Don’t mention it, Jay.” He squeezed the back of Jared’s neck before allowing him to sit back up. Jared leaned carefully back into the couch cushions. Jeff eyed him the whole time, making sure he really was fine. His eyes lingered over Jared’s abdomen and chest, even though the sweatshirt covered the healing wounds and scars. He couldn’t help it. His baby brother had been hurt again by that bastard and he’d done nothing to stop it. If only…
“You’re thinking too loud,” Jared muttered around a yawn before pulling the blankets back over his form.
“No I’m not,” Jeff huffed. “I was just…”
“Thinking about how all this is your fault.” Jared turned to look at his brother.
“No I’m not.” Jared raised his eyebrows in a disbelieving look. “How’d you know?”
“Jeff, you’re my big brother. I’ve been watching you and following you around for as long as I can remember. It’s not that hard to read you. Plus, you were never thrilled that I was on the case.”
“It wasn’t that I had a problem with you, Jay. I just didn’t want you near Lehne again.”
“I know,” Jared said softly.
“I mean,” Jeff continued with a shaky voice, “I couldn’t stop him the first time around. I should’ve been able to stop him the second.”
“Jeff, you couldn’t have known! You-“
“I saw him talking to you, Jare. At the parties and the few times you came into the office to drop off food for me. I saw him and…”
“And you didn’t know what he was saying.”
“But I knew you looked uncomfortable. I just assumed you hated politics.” Jeff snorted at the words. “I was an idiot. I should’ve-“
“And I should’ve come to you about it all. But I was too afraid…” Jared cast his eyes down to his lap. He’d never really admitted that to his brother before.
“What?”
“I just…I didn’t want to ruin things for you. I thought he was harmless at first, you know? It wasn’t like I’d never been hit on before. I thought it would blow over.”
“But it didn’t,” Jeff said sadly, scooting towards Jared more and laying his arm over Jared’s shoulder. “I should’ve been there. Should’ve stopped it…”
“Nothing you could’ve done, bub. I didn’t want to talk about…didn’t want you guys involved. It was just a big mess. And it got bigger before I could figure out a way to deal with it. No one’s fault but Lehne’s.”
“But this time was.”
“How do you figure?”
“I knew what Lehne was capable of and I still let you go undercover with the bastard.”
“Jeff,” Jared huffed, “if you haven’t noticed, I’m all grown up. You can’t exactly tell me what to do anymore. Doesn’t work that way.”
“I could’ve told JD and Jensen the truth.”
“And you know that would’ve crushed me. I didn’t want them to know.”
Jeff cast his eyes towards the floor. “But it would’ve saved you from all this. I-“
“Stop!”
Jeff was taken aback; Jared rarely raised his voice to him, even when they fought. “What?”
“Just stop blaming yourself! I just got Jen to stop, and I don’t need you doing it too. It’s Lehne’s fault. Not yours, not mine, not anyone else’s. You couldn’t have stopped me from doing this! No one could. I had to do it.”
“But-“
“Finish that sentence and I swear I’ll kick your ass.” Jeff raised his eyebrows at his little brother. “Hey, I may feel like shit but can still use my cane to beat some sense into you if I have to.” Jared smirked towards his brother, helping to dissipate some of the tension in the air.
“Got it,” Jeff smiled, relaxing for the first time in months, maybe even years. He’d always felt a sense of blame in what had happened to his brother. He was the one who had introduced Lehne to the family after all. But if Jared didn’t see it that way, maybe it was time he tried not to as well.
Jeff squeezed Jared’s shoulder and took a deep breath. “So you hungry?”
“Starving…slept through breakfast,” Jared said rubbing his eyes tiredly. As if to prove his point, his stomach growled loudly, causing Jeff to smile and shake his head.
“Wanna order a pizza and watch Star Wars?”
Jared couldn’t help but smile at that. Pizza and Star Wars was how Jeff always made him feel better, ever since they were kids. “Yeah…sounds good.”
Jeff stood from the couch and called the order in. Jared attempted to stand from the couch, but the glare Jeff sent him forced him back down onto the cushions. Jeff quickly found the box set of the original trilogy. The newscaster reporting on Lehne’s case was soon replaced by the faces of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. Jared and Jeff both leaned back and relaxed.
Maybe things really were starting to look up…
*********
The rain pounded the windshield of the Impala as Jensen pulled into the driveway. The sunny day had turned somber by the afternoon. It went great with Jensen’s dreary mood.
Jensen ran his hand through is spiky hair and sat in the Impala for a few moments. The trial had been hard to watch. Kurt Fuller was one smart bastard of a lawyer and was doing everything in his power to deflect the attention away from Lehne. He tried to push the blame onto Mark, which Sebastian had been prepared for at least. When Sebastian thwarted that idea with evidence and Mark’s testimony, Jensen had been forced to take stand during that time and it was all he could do to not jump over the stand and rip out Fuller’s throat for what he had said. It wasn’t as if he expected anything less from the defense team, but it didn’t make things any easier. He just hoped Jared hadn’t caught any of it on the news…
With a sigh, he climbed out of the car, feeling the rain pelt the suit jacket he was using as an umbrella. He ran up the steps and quickly unlocked the door. He still ended up completely drenched, but at least his head had remained fairly dry. He was pretty sure he’d ruined his suit jacket though. He threw it on the coat rack as he walked into the house. Most of the lights were turned down or completely off. The dogs and Jared were nowhere in sight.
Jensen made his way into the kitchen. A pizza box lay abandoned on the counter. He snagged a slice and ate it cold as he walked up the stairs, hoping to find Jared up there. He loosened his tie and started down the upstairs hall. A dim light shone through underneath their bedroom door. He pushed it open, finding Jared lying across the bed with both dogs surrounding him.
Jared lifted his head from the pillow as the door creaked open. “Hey,” he muttered sleepily.
“Hey,” Jensen mimed, equally as tired. He kicked off his shoes and started to undress. His damp pants and shirt ended up in a heap next to his shoes. He kept his white undershirt on and his boxers on. He then scratched the dogs behind their ears and ushered them out to their own beds for the night. He really just wanted to be with Jared at this point.
“Bad?” Jared asked as Jensen finally climbed under the covers next to him.
Jensen nodded and burrowed into the pillows. “Wanted to rip his throat out…”
Jared burrowed in next to him and pulled his lover closer. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, kissing him on the forehead.
“Don’t be. You did nothing wrong, babe.”
“Yeah…just hate you had to go. I could’ve-“
“Naw…you didn’t need to be there.”
“Gonna have to be there soon, Jen.”
“I know. Sebastian wants to go over everything with you in a couple days before you take the stand.”
“I’ll call him tomorrow. Don’t want to think about it now. Just want to be with you.” Jared leaned down and pressed a kiss to Jensen’s lips, sucking softly.
“Mmm,” Jensen moaned into the kiss. “Someone seems more rested.”
“Uh huh,” Jared smiled. “Fell asleep after you left. Then Jeff came by. We ended up vegging out on the couch all day watching Star Wars. Most rest I’ve gotten in weeks.”
“Good. You needed it,” Jensen said, running his hand through Jared’s hair.
“You know what else I need?” Jared asked before leaning back in to kiss Jensen.
Jensen’s hands settled on Jared back as he melted into the kiss. After a few seconds, he felt Jared pushing himself further against his body. He broke the kiss, looking up into Jared’s eyes. “You sure, babe? Because I don’t mind. We’ll take as long as you need. I-“
“I’m sure, Jen. Just shut up and kiss me again.” The smirk on Jared’s lips was enough to convince Jensen. He leaned in, planning on kissing it off Jared’s face.
“God,” Jared moaned, plastering himself closer to Jensen. He slid his hand under Jensen’s t-shirt, rutting it up towards his shoulder. Jensen did the same, rubbing his hands over the muscles of Jared’s abdomen. The younger man hadn’t been able to really work out since the attack, but he hadn’t lost too much of his toned physique just yet.
The two kissed and stayed that way for a little longer before Jensen didn’t think he could stand it much longer. He twisted them so that he was above Jared, putting most of his weight on his own arms so as not to put pressure on any of Jared’s still tender chest. Jared reached up and pulled Jensen’s shirt over his head. Jensen did the same for Jared, revealing the scar above his heart. The bandage had been removed, but the skin was still raised. Jared’s eyes flickered towards it before casting them back up at Jensen almost questioningly.
Jensen knew what Jared was thinking. He gently ran a hand over the distorted lily before placing a soft kiss to the flesh. When he finished, he looked up at Jared who had tears shining in his eyes. “You’re so beautiful Jay. Don’t ever doubt it.”
Before Jared could reply, Jensen attached their lips once again. The troubles and trauma of the past were momentarily pushed aside. The two melted into each other, moved together. It meant more than anything else could have, more than anything in their past.
“Love you so much, Jay,” Jensen whispered in Jared’s ear, sending shivers down the younger man’s spine. He bucked up towards Jensen, who obliged by sliding off the last of their clothes.
“Thank you,” Jared uttered slightly breathlessly.
“For what?”
“Just…for all this…for being you.”
Jensen blushed and smiled sheepishly. He nuzzled against Jared’s neck before finally pushing himself fully in. It was slow and passionate, each enjoying the sensations running through their bodies for the first time in ages. Nothing was rushed and nothing else mattered.
It wasn’t long before Jared tensed underneath Jensen and climaxed. “Jen,” he gasped, completely lost in the overpowering sensation. Jensen moaned above him and went over the edge.
It was like nothing they’d ever felt before. It was perfect. It blocked out the hell of the past and the apprehension for the future. It was just the two of them. And that was all they’d ever need.
