I found one of these on my patio just the other evening, too. Must be something seasonal or weather related, since this is the first year I've ever found one of these in Southern CA -- although I'm sure, and apparently, they've been here for a while now, just that I haven't seen them quite so brazenly available as now.
I decided to let the one, that I SEE at least, alone. It's been spinning a large web that's posed against the windiest side of the balcony, down from the roof overhead to the top of certain plants, so it looks like it's both catching the wind and the water and other bugs that are blown in on the wind.
Very creepy spiders, though. The one on my patio is very, very large, too, so, it's obviously a female. Now I'm wondering if but what I should try to capture it or something. I doubt that knocking it down from it's web or even chasing it off would accomplish much.

I found one a couple months ago in out garage. It made a web over our dryer. It scared the crap out of me. I went to get my mom, so she could dispose of it, but it was gone when we came back.
I guess you could get a jar, and carefully capture it, and then place it somewhere else if you don't want to kill it. Just put it somewhere in a deserted area.

The one that's recently appeared on my patio is suspended down from the overhanging roof, from above the patio, down over the ridge top of some of my plants/planters tops.
It appears to come out from wherever it's lodging, at sundown, and updates it's web and then sits in the center of it, waiting for something to fly by to eat.
I decided it wasn't in any place that I'd be in danger of being bit by it, but, then, again, it's going to lay eggs from the looks of the size of the thing, and it's obviously daytime sleeping somewhere where I could accidentally interact with it (and be bit that way), so, I'll give that jar capture idea a try tomorrow evening. Just to be safe.
I tend to leave spiders alone and not be upset at all, not at all, by them, but, since it's a Black Widow, I think I should try to intervene.
Yes, I'd definitely capture the thing if it was on or near my washer/dryer, or any appliance. That's too scary -- you'd just never know when you'd brush up against it, under those circumstances. Yikes!
I think I would have such a fear attack I might need CPR if I saw one. I live in Maryland, so I don't think they are here. I HATE and am scared to death of spiders, but not so scared that I won't kill them. But I would be too afarid to go near a black widow.
Hehe. Yeah. At my grandparents house, in Michigan, there was a tarantula looking spider. Big and hairy. That scared the crap out of me.
Yeah, I can't kill spiders either. I don't want to get that close to them. Plus I hate the noise when you crunch them, or any bug for that matter. So I don't kill bugs.
