I wanted to post this last week but I just had a brain fart and never got around to it. So without further ado here is my
and that movie is
Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious. This is one of those movies I just happened to catch on tv years ago and immediately fell in love. Now I never gave older movies a chance (unless it was Wizard of Oz) and I never thought I would love black and white movies. But then I saw Psycho in my senior english class and was blown away. Not too long after that my family went to Walt Disney World and a certain ride there inspired me to see my soon-to-become #1 movie of all time. So when I saw this was on tv I was interested. Notorious stars Ingrid Bergman as Alicia Huberman, who is the daughter of a convicted Nazi spy. Not long after her father's conviction she meets T. R. Devlin, who is played by Cary Grant. She gets recruited by the government to go to Brazil and spy on Alex Sebastian, who is creepily played by Claude Rains (in a good way). During everything Alicia and Devlin fall in love but he is torn because he has to send her off to seduce Alex. Then Alex's mother gets involved and there's poison, a horserace, wine bottles and MORE POISON! It's just one of those tense, romantic, slow-burning thrillers that Hitchcock just excels at! I loved every minute of this movie! Now if you don't care for slow suspense building movies this is so not for you. But if you want a good thriller with a healthy dose of romance mixed in this is a great one to see. I highly recommend seeing this alongside another one of Hitchcock's films,
Rebecca. Now that's not a political thriller but more of a whodunit. In ways it's even slower going but you'd never think it, especially with the great performances by Joan Fontaine, Laurence Olivier, and Judith Anderson as the evil Mrs. Danvers.
Scene to See: The tension in the wine cellar scene where Alicia and Devlin find a clue to what Alex and his Nazi cronies are up to is intense! It's one of those ones where you catch yourself yelling at the tv "Hurry up! He's almost there! Get out dammit!"
Trivia: -Per usual Hitchcock can be seen in the movie as a champagne drinker at a party about one hour into the movie.
-Alfred Hitchcock and Ben Hecht consulted Nobel Prize winner Dr. Robert Millikan on how to make an atomic bomb. He refused to answer, but confirmed that the principal ingredient, uranium, could fit in a wine bottle.
-The legendary on-again, off-again kiss between Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman was intended to flaunt then-current film code regulations that restricted the length of kisses to only a couple of seconds each.
Opening this week:
Lakeview Terrace,
Blindness,
The Duchess,
Igor, and
Appaloosa all come out this Friday. Unfortunately also coming out is My Best Friend's Girl, which I just have no desire to see (unless we see Kate Hudosn fly away on her huge ears) and Ghost Town which I do want to see but I'm just very wary about.
Tomorrow on DVD: Speed Racer, 88 Minutes, Made of Honor and Young@Heart. I've heard that Young@Heat is one of those awesome, very fun documentaries that just make you smile. The tv DVD sets are the first seasons of Chuck (I LOVE CHUCK!!! I defy you to watch this and just not love the comedy/action/sci-fi/drama that is Chuck. Zachary Levi I LOVE YOU!), Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies, and Private Practice. We also have the second season of Torchwood (James Marsters YUMMMMMM) and the third season of Criminal minds.
Hopefully I'll see Burn After Reading soon and I'll be able to put up a review for that one. If not I'll try for "Movies I have to Watch Every Time They're On" or my #3 favorite movie.
