I, like many others, watched the finale of Hannibal this weekend, and I have ALL THE THOUGHTS AND FEELS.
First of all, overall, I think that was one of the most perfect endings for a show ever. My first thought after seeing Will taking Hannibal over the cliff was "I love my AUs with appropriately bloody, loving AU endings!"
I thought the second season was the most beautiful, heartbreaking, bloody breakup ever, and there they go and give me an even better one!
I love that you can look at this story from any number of angles: the twisted love story of Will and Hannibal. The story of Will fighting and at times losing his darker self. A Grimm Brothers fairytale for a modern age.
I love that everything is so tangled for most everyone in this show, Will most of all. I love that it's hard to tell what's driving him and what will win out: his sense of right or the temptation of his darker self. Or just the temptation of Hannibal. I don't even know that it's the darkness that appeals to Will so much as the cessation of emotional pain: Hannibal does not have moral quandaries, doesn't worry about how other people feel or don't feel, and there's got to be something very attractive about that all on its own. I think Hannibal's inconvenient compassion for Will is the closest to an emotional dilemma he's felt in decades. (That Hannibal puts it into terms of compassion, I think, shows his own sociopathy. He honestly does not--or is unwilling to--recognize such a thing as love in himself, whatever twisted version of it exists.)
Strange and Random Thoughts From the Episode:
* Blackly funny how Chilton's lack of lips made him incapable of "b"s and "w"s, so Will and Hannibal--yeah, not easy.
* Will is strangely cat-like when he goes in to embrace Hannibal in that last scene. Sort of headbutting his way into a hug.
* I have missed Price and Zeller through this season. Glad we had one last touching base with them.
If you haven't read it, there's an interesting
Interview with Bryan Fuller concentrating on both the series as a whole and the finale in particular. I finished it hoping for two things: 1) There better be some of those alternate takes from that final scene with Hannibal and Will on the DVD; and 2) I wonder what the division is on how people interpreted that final shot with Bedelia and her leg. My first interpretation was the interviewer's from the article: that something finally snapped in her head and she was offering herself up as dinner for someone who would never come. (Keeping in mind I understand the unlikelihood of her being able to butcher and prepare her own leg then dress provocatively dress for Hannibal, all at once. But there are less likely things in the show.) But, again, it's so ambiguous, and I love that.
No bodies, no death. Or maybe there is. Who can say?
Also watched the second episode of Fear the Walking Dead, which I am loving. The slow burn is speeding up.
I think what I'm liking most so far is that as much as we the audience are tensing because we know where this is all leading, the collapse is starting well before there are massive amounts of Walkers--or whatever they will end up being called by these guys--rambling around and chowing down. Humans have always been, and always will be, our own worst enemy. We are our most monstrous--and most amazing--when we are on edge and nervous, especially when there are things going on we don't fully understand. It's what TWD has always been about, and FtWD seems to be embracing that even more.
I also love how they're framing things. You see figures in the background and in passing, and our TWD-trained eyes say "Walker," but there's nothing lingered on, and nothing which says it must be. (My favorite was from the first episode and you see someone kind of walking/limping through the park. Could be a Walker. Could be a homeless person. Who can say at this point?) And sometimes the camera goes back and it's a Walker, and sometimes it doesn't go back at all, so you're left with that sense of unease and uncertainty, which helps you get into the mindset of the characters who are not expecting any of this.
My big happiness, though, was just seeing Rueben Blades, who I knew was coming, and will embrace being here for however long he survives. Yay!
It is September tomorrow, which means the return of certain shows is not that far away! ACK! Full calendar of premiere dates
is here, if anyone's looking.
