NAME: Daja Kisubo
CODENAME: N/A
SERIES/SOURCE: Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce
AGE: 13
GENDER: female
ROLE: student
BACKGROUND:
Daja was born into a clan of water-loving people who made their wealth sailing from dock to dock, trading and bartering. She practically lived aboard the ships her family owned, living like water-gypsies, having mixed and matched various traditions of many different cultures to make their own unique ways of doing things. Daja never realized she had powers, because she was always steered away from metal-workings and such, told to remain a trader and not a maker.
That is, until unforeseen disaster stuck and Daja's ship sank--along with her all of her immediate family. She survived by clinging to a metal-lined box that held special cases of food and water for wrecks like these. The lone survivor, Daja drifted in the sea before a mutant with vision powers, called Niko, found her and had the ship he was on bring her to safety.
But the rest of her family claimed she was tainted with bad luck, and cast her out. So Niko her took the lonely girl to the Living Circle commune, which was a 'safe place' for mutants to stay. There she met Sandry and they became fast, if a bit awkward (on Daja's part anyway) friends.
After getting into trouble with some of the other girls in the commune, Daja and Sandry were sent to a cottage named Discipline, where they stayed with their new foster mothers Rosethorn and Lark. And soon enough two more mutant children, Briar and Tris, joined them.
While Rosethorn took Briar under her leaves, Niko took Tris under his wing, and Sandry and Lark wove wings and leaves together, Daja was left to wander the commune's grounds until she ran into Frostpine, another mutant with powers similar to her own.
Working with Frostpine, Daja learned how to work metal in a forge, and through that, how to work her powers. Together with Sandry, Tris, and Briar, Daja grew strong and deeply connected to her new 'family'.
During an earthquake the four of them were trapped underground in a cave with their dog, Little Bear. Sandry used her thread magic to spin their powers together and that made them stronger and let them keep themselves from being crushed by the collapsing tunnel. After they did this, their powers began to leak into one another's. They had gained a telepathic link to each other and a sense for anything magical that happened to any of the other three.
Then later on, during a horrible pirate attack on their commune, they spun themselves again so they were able to defend their home against the invaders. This time, their powers began to mix and melt into each other, causing unknown things to happen, like Briar summoning fire instead of plants, or Daja growing metal like a plant.
When Daja attempted to stop a forest fire that threatened the commune, the combined powers melted the brass cap of her staff to her hand, somehow making it have a coating of living metal.
Rosethorn and Lark decided it was best to send the four to XI so to learn control over their new combined powers and maybe find a way to separate themselves out again.
PERSONALITY:
Daja is a well-grounded person. She puts forward a strong and solid front, not letting small things bother her and trying to remain a firm ground for the others in the group. However, she is not all strong and solid, mainly she shows this in material objects instead of actual breakdowns like some of the others. Daja keeps her blank staff and her survival box with her when she goes places, centering her weakness into items so she has to at once face that weakness everyday, by carrying that staff and all it means, but also it spaces her away from the true pain because it's an object and she can put it away if she wants.
Openly pretty friendly with people who mean her no harm, Daja is pretty good about smiles and opening herself to people. She has a good heart and while it can take a bit to get to see all of that heart, she isn't really shy. She likes to tease and be just as playful as Briar at times.
Daja can be very protective of her friends, especially the circle four. She's willing to jump into things without thinking for the sake of her friends or her mentors. Daja doesn't scare easily and even then, will work through any discomfort for the sake of someone else's happiness. Even if they never thank her, she's still willing to put her own life in danger if it means her powers can protect others.
APPEARANCE:
Daja's a broad-shouldered girl, with dark skin and black hair usually done up in braids or something at least to keep it from getting in her way while she's working with the hot metal. She's still wearing a red armband to signify her mourning of her family (her people wear red instead of black for mourning), but otherwise she prefers clothes she can work in and not be afraid to get sooty.
POWERS:
Daja's powers run through metal and working with it. She can sense and manipulate metal, usually with the help of fire, which she can summon as long as she has something to pull from (like the ground or her own body heat). She can also walk through moderately strong flames without causing her anymore than a bit of warmth. She had handle cherry hot metal without burning herself and also breath smoke for a decent amount of time.
However, because of Sandry, Daja has a telepathic link to the other three, as well as random manifestations of their powers within her own. She can control her own power well enough, but all four of their powers? She can't control that at all.
ANYTHING ELSE?:
Daja carries around a staff with blank, brass, metal caps on each end, which although it mimics the family staffs of her clan, the blank caps signify her status as disowned from her family. She is trained in using the staff as a weapon and carries it around as at once protection, and also for remembrance of her family.
Also, her hand has a coating of brass, same as her staff. It grows on top of her actual skin like a living glove, and has to be removed by peeling off pieces of it or it will happily cover her entire arm and soon her whole body.
- RP SAMPLES
First-person sample:
These rules about large pets are ridiculous. Little Bear is very well trained, and would cause no trouble. And no he's not an actual bear, do you think we're insane?
I just don't see why we have to keep him with Rosethorn. She could be out there teaching him to bite people who come into her garden, and then we'll never get to have him sleep in our dormrooms.
Third-person sample:
Daja leaned on her staff, absently wiping the sweat from her brow and looked out over the workshop. More nails. She hated nails.
It was all Frostpine would let her make after what she had done to her hand. Granted, she didn't completely understand what she had done to her hand. Tracing the burn marks on the staff with her metal hand, she figured she should have a new staff made. This one was charred and missing part of its top where the forest fire had managed to get to it.
The girl frowned, her mind already reaching for Briar to ask for wood, before she caught herself. He would be sleeping by now--or if not sleeping, then he should be asleep. Soon they would be off to this new school and the others needed their strength.
Daja wished for a task more interesting than nails, perhaps that would get her mind off the worries of the new school and let her eventually find sleep.
Instead she squared her shoulders and went back to work. Sleep would come when it did.
