As someone who has enough frequent flyer miles to circle the globe twice and as one who only recently stopped flying every weekend, I will tell you this:
1. The x-rays and metal detectors don't pick up lighters. They only catch them if they pull you for a frisking.
2. Check EVERYTHING. Don't even bother with the baggies. It's far more hassle than it's worth.
3. No. That is probably not enough time. Call a cab the night before, arrange to have them pick you up at 5. That should put you there by 5:30 - 5:45. Check in at an e-kiosk if at all possible. Check your bags curbside if there are lines at the kiosks. Tip the dude well and your shit is guaranteed to make it there, possibly before you do.
If you still have time to kill and the lines at security aren't bad, grab a coffee and park yourself outside to nicotine up before the flight. Make sure you're at your gate by NLT 7:30.

this part i agree with - dont bother with baggies - too much hassle. check your soap and shit, but make sure they're wrapped so they dont leak when your luggage gets tossed aruond.
Check EVERYTHING. this part i disagree with. do not check anything that is important - keys, cell phone, medication and that key presentation you've been working on for your company. i am sure this seems like common sense, but the reality is, people sometimes get really stupid when they fly. if your bag gets lost and you have your scripts in there, you are either trying to call your doctor at 3am or you are going without your meds until the bag is recovered
( ... )
My bad. I was referring to luggage everything, mot everything a chick would carry in her purse. Being a chick who carries a purse, I would agree that phones, keys, smokes, wallet, gum, meds etc. should not be checked.
And Mike, I am sorry that you have to deal with idiots that dumb.
This is only true for hand luggage you take on board. You can put whatever in the luggage you drop off at check in. So do not take tooth paste, meds, liquids and all that stuff behind the security controls and you will be totally cool...
mbta.com says that the green line starts.. at 4:45 from Boston College. I'd say 5:20-5:30ish would be good to catch the T to get to Logan by 6:50 to check in.
I need to fly out from Logan in Sept.. which is why I booked a 9:40ish flight to make it easier to take the T to the airport. It's a nonstop to San Francisco. The kicker? My parents booked the same flight so we're all going to sit together.
put your soap, shaving cream, lotion, whatever the hell that's even remotely liquidy [or has the potential to be] in them anyway, seal them, then check them. this is something people tell you to do not because of security but because if they explode, bust, break open, melt whatever during travel, the rest of your clothes and crap will be saved. do it. your mother will be proud.
good luck packing! [and i'm with everyone else - i don't rely on the T for ANYTHING that has a timestamp. esp. on a holiday, and a weekend, and in the morning.]
