being from rhode island i have a problem drinking tap water anywhere else. it all tastes downright disgusting to me. my friend who's been in vermont for a good while now, whenever i visit, still asks me to bring her jugs of ri tap water
( ... )
I absolutly LOVE Smartwater...and totally agree that it can be sitting somewhere for 3 days and taste the same...I think it is because they processes it with vapor distilation...basically the same process used to make wiskey...and it takes all the impurities and chemicals out of the water...
tap water here tastes horrible to me, but pur does it's job and makes it taste great. gloucester water is notoriously bad - we regularly fail the min. lead particulate test, among others.
when i'm on the road and i'm thirsty, i try to go to gas stations that have fountain machines. i'll buy a 32 oz "soda" for 69c, but instead fill it with ice and tap water. failing that, sometimes i am stuck buying bottled water because the new fountain machines dont seem to have a water selection anymore. :/
i dont like buying bottled water, but if my only other choice is soda or nothing for x miles, then it's got to be bottled.
I'd like to reject bottled water for moral reasons, but the reality is some tap water tastes just nasty. I couldn't get enough of the stuff in Clermont, France (Vichy water!), but when I lived in Brookline I inadvertently got really sick from dehydration because even the Brita couldn't improve the tap water. Now that I'm in Cambridge, I drink it with ice when I'm thirsty, but it's not an enjoyable experience and I probably don't hydrate as well as I should. And when you're on the road, bottled water is a good way to keep drinking water that's hopefully more safe than the sketchy old bubbler in the back of a gas station. Also, I heard something about the plastic in reusable bottles eventually breaking down and leaching into the water? I definitely stay better hydrated with my Camelbak, but it makes everything taste plasticky. I think it's a no-win situation.
