http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/6312707.stm - Manchester is getting a supercasino, with attached leisure facilites and so on. Bit of a blow for Blackpool and Cardiff, who were favourites, but it could work.
Not sure why so many people are feeling surprised by this, and more so why everyone still had Blackpool as favourites. Blackpool was virtually pimping itself as Vegas by the sea which would've been wonderful for the Daily Mail; Labour would have been pushing for any other choice ever since they discovered the idea could cause a backlash. London has enough casinos already, they'd almost certainly want anywhere but the Dome. Still, the punters bet on those ones so they became favourites by default.
Cardiff seems a funny one, not much going for it but not much against it either - their biggest arguement seems to have been the Olympics in 2012. I guess the "catchment area" argument they've given is true, although Manchester does have a few more positives going for it too.
Doesn't make a vast amount of difference to me - I'm not really likely to go to a supercasino whether it's here, Blackpool, London or anywhere else. We're got a few little casinos around, from what I can tell, but I've not been to those either...
