I believe most prefer the term transgender or transperson. "Gender crossing women" implies a temporary state of choice, or something like cross dressing to me. As a F to M trans person, I wouldn't like to be referred to as a gender crossing person. That's my 2 cents.

I think the use of the gender-crossing term is intended to cover broader range of phenomena than the modern transgender. In most cases we can only speculate whether these individual felt they had a gender different than their physical one or whether they were successfully adopting a cross gender presentation in order to live their life the way they wanted.
