This traditional breakfast goodie for the Easter season was in my Grandmother's recipe collection.
HOT CROSS BUNS
--Ethel Fairclough
2 cups milk, scalded and cooled
2 Tbsp sugar
2 yeast cakes
1/2 cup spry (shortening)
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
3/4 cup currants
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Rind of 1 orange
7-7 1/2 cups flour
Dissolve yeast in 2 Tbsp sugar and milk that has been scalded and cooled to lukewarm. Add 3 ½ cups flour and beat it well. Cover and let rise until light.
Cream shortening, 2/3 cup sugar, and salt. Add to yeast mixture with eggs and rest of ingredients and enough flour to make dough easy to knead. Knead well and place in a greased dish. Let rise to double in bulk. Shape into medium balls, place on greased cookie sheet. Let rise until very light.
Cut cross on top with scissors or sharp knife before baking. Bake at 350°F for 15-20 minutes. Frost with a thin glaze.
EDIT: I remember singing a song about Hot Cross buns when I was little. Anybody else know that one?
