“Pain, Dolores, is always the best of teachers.”
Words of wisdom. Mother of course was always right, Dolores knew. When she’d been a bad girl, she deserved punishment, and punishment was always given. That was fair, that was how things worked. There was no use crying about it, because that wouldn’t ever change Mother’s mind. The pain was there to teach you not to do the same bad thing twice. It taught you that the world was unforgiving of those who didn’t follow the Rules.
“I love you, Dolores.”
Mother did love her, she did. Otherwise she wouldn’t care so much. One has to care in order to want to teach. Only those who have limitless love in their hearts know that severe strictness and pain were the only ways to instruct the ones we love. If we don’t pass on the lessons we have learnt, then we are not being true to the love that we feel. Mother hurt her because she cared so much, and wanted to make sure that Dolores would be happy in the world. She wanted Dolores to never forget.
“This is for your own good, Dolores.”
Words scratched into her hand, the scar to remind her always that she must not be bad. I Must Not Be a Bad Girl. Mother had said that was the best motto to etch into her, one that would cover every possible situation. Always be good, never be bad. Do what is right and you won’t get hurt. Always do what is right. Pass on this love you feel, and make sure that people always do the right thing.
“You’re such a good girl, my little Dolores. So much love in you.”
Mother knew that she had so much love to give. She only punished her so much because she had to learn to temper that love with the pain that would make it strong and true. Weakness would destroy love, it always did. Better to dole out pain with a firm but gentle hand, like a mother cat to a kitten. Kittens always listened to their mothers. Dolores loved kittens so very much, admiring how quickly they learned to follow the Rules of Mother.
“Do the right thing, Dolores.”
Words from her Mother’s deathbed, imploring her to never forget the lessons she had learnt. How badly she wanted to uphold the promise she made to her Mother. Dolores knew that she had to make sure everyone always did the right thing, the right way. Mother had sacrificed too much for Dolores to not carry on her mission. Mother loved her so much, was so good, and she would want Dolores to pass on the love she’d given her. And she would, she swore that she would. Love everyone. Teach everyone.
“Pain, Dolores, is always the best of teachers.”
