I have a general idea of what woodmen do, however, I would like to know more about the ins-and-outs of their lifestyle during the time of Maurice. How long they tend to spend in one location, their living conditions, any available slang terminology, etc. Anyone got any links?

Also, has anyone made a timeline of the story?

I'm afraid I can't provide you with any links - but your question made me think about the topic, about whether we should take for given that even if Alec and Maurice 'take to the greenwood', that they wuold necessarily work as woodsmen? As far as I know (and it's not much ;) it would be seasonal work, and work you'd have to move around often to do, and finally work that was done in larger teams. I can't see two men doing it on their own. I know Forster mentions it in the epilogue - that's a point againt my argument.

The time-line is a good idea. It should be book-verse, shouldn't it?

Here's a bit for starters:
Clive is born in 1888 - IF we we assume that he is one year ahead at university because he is year older than Maurice. Not sure about his birthday, but I think it's about the time he has that 'conversion'

Maurice is born in 1889, his birthday is in August [cricket match]

Kitty is born 1891 [incidental evidence in the discarded epilogue]

They stay up at Cambridge 3 and 4 years respectively

Cricket match is in August 1913

I thought that if I knew more about the living options for that career, I could puzzle out something a little more cohesive than the glimpse Forster presented in the epilogue. Like Maurice and Alec probably have a cottage to return to when work is out of season. (Then I'd have to find out what they'd do during those lulls to carry on.) And maybe they typically work in larger groups, but sometimes take on smaller projects that are more akin to landscaping.

I may drop by the library this weekend to do a little light research.

Ah, I understand that. I would definitely be interested to hear more if you learn anything of interest. In any case, your question stirred my curiosity and I'll probably have a look myself.

And yes, the time-line would go by book-verse. (Does the movie go by a different time-line? I didn't pay that close attention to notice.) I think I have a few more dates in my notest. I'll make another post later with my findings and (if need be) everyone can add to it.
