hmm... I often call 2 or more companies. This after I called a cab to get a ride to the airport, was told it would be the infamous 15 minutes to an hour (wtf? which is it?) and then an hour later when no cab showed, I tried to call the company, no answer. I waited a few more minutes, no answer. I finally called a different company, got a ride to the airport, but missed the flight. I figured maybe the company was having technical difficulties, but they could have at least called me afterwards to explain. They had my phone number. Fuckers. So yeah, when I have to be somewhere, I'm going to call 2 or more companies, both because of my experience, and because 15 minutes and 60 minutes are very different estimates. Sorry.

I can't imagine how awful it would be to drive drunks home, especially those angry drunks like you described. I could never be a cab driver. I'd want to kill too many people.

I can't answer for the cab company's incompetence, but I can tell you that your actions screw the driver - who was not responsible for giving you an unmeetable ETA: drivers do not get an hourly wage, and are usually responsible for their own fuel.
The standard thing that we do, when we discover that someone called 2 companies, is we both leave the customer - and call the other companies.

The only thing I can really suggest, is that you never do business again with anyone who screws you. Don't spread the misery. When you're hungry, you don't order pizzas from 2 companies, and only pay for the first one that shows up, do you?
I did notice that you called the first company to cancel the ride, when the 2nd was more on the ball, and that's a step that many people conveniently forget to do.

Fair enough. But in the end, I was screwed so I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen again. It wasn't an unmeetable ETA. They never showed. Period. It was an early morning call. Whether it's the driver or the dispatcher is really no matter to me, because they're both representative of the same company as far as I'm concerned. But it sounds like you have a shitty setup with the cab company. I hear what you're saying, but who should be the one that suffers then? As a customer, I should be the last one to get screwed in the situation. I guess you have a different take on it. People call two companies (or at least I do) because when every company says 15 minutes to an hour or more (sometimes they say 2 hrs), I really have no idea what to expect, or if they'll show at all. (And I'm talking about off peak hours ( ... )

The driver does not represent the company: he is an independent contractor: From the money given to him by the customer, he must pay the company for the use of their car, and the fuel used to pick up the customer and run the order. He receives no hourly wage. There are times, like last night, where cab drivers make a lot less than minimum wage, but unlike wait-staff, their boss is not obligated to make up the shortfall in tips - because he is an independent contractor ( ... )
