Dear Lazyweb...

A friend of mine is wanting to record an MP3 and sell it as a download, presumably via the usual Web outlets for selling music MP3s, to raise money for Help for Heroes.

She's a bloody good singer (she is the lead tenor in the Village Quire, which I may have mentioned in the past, and has one of the best folk-voices I've heard, on-stage or off), ( Read more... )

I don't know the answer, but my FL includes several pro and semi-pro folk musicians who are doing this sort of thing. May I quote, and link across, from my own LJ?

Yeah, sure. I left the post unlocked in case anyone wanted to point any outside help in my direction! Thanks!

Would bandcamp be an idea? From what I've heard the procedure is rather simple and the artist can set the price (or even set a minimum price - which can be zero - and a "pay what you like" option).
I've seen people use the site for audio books, too.

Thanks, I have passed that on, and it seems that others agree with you!

Definitely Bandcamp. It's the easiest one to use, has the most transparent fee structure and is fast becoming seen as an industry standard.

The key to selling well is forcing it viral somewhere - I'd recommend using her publicity database and asking them to push it, *hard*. Very often a good YouTube video will help, although some people will simply rip the MP3 from YouTube rather than buying the track - it's swings and roundabouts. The biggest thing will be to just get out and sing it in every environment that she's a known face - folk clubs, open mics, straight gigs etc. Get other artists to cover it and sing it out too.

If I can help in any way, I'd be happy to :-)

Many thanks for the endorsement of Bandcamp and for the marketing suggestions. I've passed your comments on to my friend Susie.

Comment on the FB echo of my LJ post that links here: "Nick Eden: My folkie friends on twitter suggest bandcamp".
So we have agreement.
