Oppression can be stealthy. This is a relatively novel concept though. Let me back up my idea a little. The only thing that is worse than the oppression you feel on your back like an anvil overhead ready to crush you if you stray from the path of least resistance, is oppression that hides the fact that the anvil is dangerously close and hanging by ( Read more... )

I agree with certain things you said, and disagree with others (but don't feel like arguing). But I want to go live on a commune now.

I'm in the same boat.

Yeah, according to my analogy it is sinking and we have no other boat to choose from! But in all seriousness, one day you will understand what I'm talking about... I'll find a way to explain it to the both of you so that it clicks...

Thanks for taking the time to read this though, I know it was brutally long. Hopefully it was entertaining as well.

You know a big reason why I didn't post for over a week was that discussion we had. I couldn't sleep all night because I was thinking of exactly how I could explain to you what is happening in regards to the relationship between sex and consumerism. I think I had a pretty good response lined up (I even ran it by defrocked), but in the end I felt intimidated by what I perceived would be the length of the post (it probably would have been longer than this one), so I decided against it.

The situation was further exasperated because I had formulated another post in my mind about another subject from the same night. I believe that subject would require an essay longer than the cumulation of this one and the one never written. The whole process was exhausting and I never wrote a word.

As a side note this is a big reason why I didn't want dutchman04 as a friend. I felt that I would have to write an endless amount of essays explaining concepts that I feel are simple, but require an intricate execution of language to be properly explained. I think this alone ( ... )

You make some very interesting points... I don't want a dictator, but I share your frustration with the way things are today.

You should write a book. Seriously. You have a lot of opinions and the knowledge to back them up. Also, the intelligence to write about them eloquently. :)

Wow thanks for the great compliment. I'm glad you like my writing. Coming from a writer that mean a lot to me.

As for the book. About a year and a half ago I wrote about 10 chapters. The writing was similar to this post in length, content, and style while still being varied in thoughts. The problem is that I personally get frustrated with the idea of a book. I find the length daunting, and worse of all I find that my writing & typing is too slow to keep up with my own thought process. Lastly I don't see publishers jumping on a book that for the most part discredits the last 100 years of human history when they themselves are such an integral part of it.

But thank you for the motivation. The Computer I wrote the book on self destructed this summer but I believe I have a copy on disk somewhere. Perhaps I'll revisit it sometime soon.

At the very least, maybe you could find a like-minded zine to have some of your writing published in? I can't think of any titles off the top of my head because I'm not really into the zine scene, but I know I've seen some really well-written, thought-provoking zines with political and cultural articles in them over the years...

Where can I find this pyramid of self actualization? I consider myself pretty actualized, but sex wasn't really a part of it.

I have this dream about living in a self-sufficient squatters community. I think those folks are on to the right idea.

Do a yahoo search of "Maslow's Pyramid of Human Needs" or "Maslow Self Actualization". There are plenty that come up, but I have noticed that some religious fanatics have altered the pyramid to have "spirituality" above Self actualization. Be weary of those, that is a pervertation of Maslow's theory. I personally think this one is pretty good. The only problem is that they've changed the bottom level's name from "Physiological Needs" to "Survival", although the text below gets it correct ( ... )

Haha, I was gonna say. The other day in class someone said "seducted," along the same lines.
