I'm halfway through Peter Ward Fay's excellent, if increasingly convoluted and in-depth, 1970s case-study: THE OPIUM WAR, 1840 - 1842: Barbarians in the Celestial Empire in the Early Part of the Nineteenth Century and the War by Which They Forced Her Gates Ajar.

Sadly, he's very dead; just like every other writer I'm reading at the moment.
