It's almost criminal that John Smith never got the same commercial success Grant Morrison received.
Cradlegrave and his Dredd/Waugh/Pussyfoot 5 stories are probably about the easiest to get into of any of his works, but everything else from Revere to Leatherjack should win the page-turning masses over with their sheer Sweet Lordy WTF = WinWinWin capacity.
I've been reading his New Statesman recently (I'll upload it for you sooner or later): the only superhero comic I've ever chanced upon where ten issues in I still can't understand what. the fuck. is going on.
