I have never struggled so hard to finish a book as I did this one. I don't know if van de Wetering is a native Dutchman writing in English or if he just had a shockingly bad translator, but neither of these possibilities explains the utter ( Read more... )

I read "Outsider in Amsterdam" by this guy many years ago. I thought it was pretty good. I believe he actually was a Dutch policeman for a while.

As for hard to find books, I am looking for an original Ace paperback edition of "Junky." That must go for a pretty penny now.

I was a bit underwhelmed by Junky myself. After reading Naked Lunch, it didn't really seem weird enough. Though I did have a supervisor who swore blind that the earlier book was the only Burroughs worth reading.

I'm not a Burroughs fan, but I am writing some fiction set in New York in that era and I am researching the crime and junk scene for it. From what I've read, "Junky" is the most fact-based of Burroughs' books, and that is why I am interested in it.
