To me, it seemed like they had this thought process.

"Hey, we have material for at least three good Spider-Man movies. Probably more."

"Wait, we only have the principals locked up for one more movie."

"Oh... better put all that into one movie, and cut out the stuff like plot and character development."

Also, Dr. Connors was missing his right arm in Spider-Man 2, and I don't think he was in the first one (since there weren't any scenes in college in that one). So they did keep that consistent, and I was certain after the second that the Lizard was going to be the villain in this one.

Of course, considering they keep killing off the villains, that would have been bad.

And I still think the way they should have created Venom was that the suit got seperated from Tobey McGuire and couldn't tell the difference between Tobey and Topher Grace (hey, haven't we all had that problem?).
