I'm not too sure, but I would say that a lot of it has to do with the average American's understanding of the theory of evolution. If asked about their reaction to evolution, I'm sure an overwhelming majority of those who believed it to be false would respond with, "I was never no monkey," while an insignificant percentage among those who believed it to be false would respond with, "I was never no eukaryote that, due to some variety of ideal circumstances and scientific processes, adapted to a changing environment in such a way that they possessed increased form and function and through scientifically documented changes diversified into a variety of organisms that are still changing today," and a few would have the decency to, more accurately, say "ape" instead of "monkey."

I can't tell from that chart, but if we were to disregard those who are unsure (which includes our president, oddly enough), how evenly are we split up?
