Rant - may be of interest, as opposed to my recent self-pity binge.

One of the things which I think is fucking me over a bit is the increasingly common practice of headhunting people for roles.

This is fine. If you want to promote someone from within the company, or if you want a particular person to do the job, then ask them to take it. It should be as simple as that.

'We think you'd be great at this. Do you want to do it?'

'Why yes, thank you very much.'

'Great, here's your $100,000 paycheck, see you on Monday.'

Unfortunately, although this goes on behind closed doors, there's always the utter sham of advertising the job, gathering applications from people who never stood any chance at all of getting the position, wasting money, time, paper and emotional energy on all sides.

I once worked on a jobsearch where exactly this happened. I spent fully half of my working hours processing applications for a really cushy job we were advertising. There were so many people who had put in a ton of effort into their applications, spending hundreds of dollars to FedEx us their supporting documents. We used a whole filing cabinet to store the applications.

But there was a 'second' jobsearch going on, where secret correspondence was being sent to two folks who'd been cherry-picked for the positions. When I heard about this, I felt so bad for the poor saps who'd been sending their applications in to us, when they never really stood any chance. They were probably dreaming about how they'd spend the salary, how much it would advance their careers...and yet, it was all a total sham, because we were going behind their backs.

I think it's immoral, and it's probably happening to me in some of the jobs I'm going for.

If someone wants a particular person to take on a job, they should have the right to just damn well ask them directly without advertising a position which isn't really open. It's expensive, time-consuming, and it gives false hope to people like me who are looking for work.

Does anyone know if it's a legal requirement to advertise a position? If so, I think it'd save a lot of time and effort if that requirement was rescinded in certain circumstances.
