I don't think we're much alone - after our pipes froze, the city advised people to leave a tap dripping in just in case. A bit late for our purposes, but it suggests there's a lot of it going around.

Any guesses on what caused the hole? I certainly wouldn't have any!

The hole was for the basement bathroom vent - there's a fan to draw out the humid air so the paint doesn't peel, and towels get all mouldy. However, there's also a pretty big air duct leading to the bathroom that pushes all the air out, so there's no longer a need for that exhaust duct. As such, I wasn't too worried about ripping it out entirely.

It's funny how emotionally draining home renos can be - every time something breaks, I take it personally, as if the house is an extension of myself in some way. I don't know why.

Hah. Poor marks for reading comprehension over here. :)

Yeah, I've wondered how I'd feel if I was the owner of some of the places I've lived. I still don't know if I'd have the same feeling as you, though.

However, the tap that's been running in my current place for a year and a half would probably be fixed and I suspect that would make me feel quite a bit better [and I'd fix it myself anyway were it not for the fact that our sink is ancient and has no valves to turn off for quick fixes like that].
