So the problem with trying to say whether I am or am not interested in #1 is that I know pretty close to absolutely nothing about cameras beyond point it the right way, don't put your fingers in the way, and push the button.
However, Matthew is getting more and more interested a la last paragraph in getting a better camera but I have no idea if a desire for a better camera would translate into this particular camera being a sensible one to pursue (though my gut feeling after some quick poking about is that it's likely idiotic to pursue

Well, #1 is the first DSLR I ever owned - it's definitely a beginner's camera, with a fairly flexible lens, but nothing that'll knock your socks off. That said, it's a camera a beginner could get a lot of mileage out of before noticing limitations (I got about 4 years out of it), and is has the virtue of being cheap, since it's not the latest and greatest.
#2 is a much more advanced camera, and, while I'm sure Matthew could certainly extract full value from it, it's a fair bit more expensive.

#2 is a much more advanced camera, and, while I'm sure Matthew could certainly extract full value from it, it's a fair bit more expensive.
