On Fighting and Exercise

Jun 04, 2009 20:54

You know, I think I could use a fight about now. Really. Not necessarily to seriously injure anyone... it could be with foam-covered PVC weapons for all I care, and in fact it would probably be preferable to not have to deal with medical bills afterward. But it's the principle of the matter: I haven't been able to really exert any stress in a long ( Read more... )

Until you find a job, you have a lot of time on your hands so you could go to whatever rec center is close by and find out what they offer. Don't have a car? You can walk. My motivation to do it is the motivation to get to the place I'm going and then the motivation to get home.

True, but I can't afford anything in the rec centers. And while walking to and from might take away some of the physical energy, it wouldn't really solve the aggression. But I guess it is something.

Beth and I stopped by a Tai Chi dojo yesterday, actually... $130 a month is way too much for me until I have the sort of job that isn't available right now, but maybe someday I'll take it up if I stay in the area.

As someone too small to successfully pick fights, but who always wanted to, I kinda see where you're coming from. D:

If you can eliminate the gear problem and you know how to ice skate - maybe hockey's an option? There's probably a T-accessible rink if you're still in Boston. Anyone playing the sport can basically expect to be roughed up, so that whole 'delicate' problem goes out the window -- and there's always room for a brawler, even if you're not up there with the best players. At the very least, checkin' people into the wall looks like the most satisfying thing ever. (And "sports injuries" are totally legit with employers?)

...or you could find a dorky LARP club where people actually do mock-swordfights? *fail*

You wanted to pick fights? I'm surprised... you just don't seem the type. Not that it's bad, I just haven't seen that side of you.

Actually, I think hockey is probably one of the best team sports ever conceived. Particularly the checking. There's just the equipment, ice skating, and money problems. But I definitely appreciate how not-frail hockey players are. I know street hockey can be pretty fun, but then you usually end up with a few of the "please don't hit me" types, which can ruin it.
(And I assume sports injuries are at least more legit? At least it shows that you're active, which employers seem to like...)

A LARP club could actually be quite fun... the problem, though, is that I'm not even social enough for them. Which is an all-time pathetic achievement, I know. But I'm usually not very openly animated and I couldn't really break into a group without at least having a friend to bring me in. But it sounds fun! D:

Well, if you ever wanted to join in you probably could... you're the type of female that "dudes only" dudes could be comfortable around (and I mean that in a good way).
And you don't really have reason to be concerned about being in a bathing suit, or at least not from my perspective.

Also, are you graduating soon?

Smash with other players can be a pretty good reliever, but you do need the other players of equal skill.
And holy crap! Didn't know there was a board that big dedicated to Smash Bros tournaments. They would definitely be better than me (I'm usually kind of terrible) but it would be fun nonetheless. I'd probably need to hold off until I had a car or something, but it could be fun.

I keep forgetting to find Oni. I need to look into getting it... it's old, but I remember it being very fun.

And I actually identified a lot with the Fight Club style of support grouping. :p

By the way, any news on the Peace Corps?
