Name: Sam Flynn
Age: 27
Canon: Tron: Legacy
Canon Point: Post-movie
History:
http://tron.wikia.com/wiki/Sam_Flynn I will be taking him from when he and Quorra are heading back to the real world. Instead of ending up home, he winds up here. Fighting for his life once again.
Personality: One of the biggest aspects of Sam’s personality is that he is a recluse and a loner. He's lived on his own for nearly ten years with only a dog to keep him company. He doesn't even have neighbors. He is visited by his godfather at one point and he jokes around about the surrogate father thing being cute when he was twelve, but recommends they meet up again in another couple of years. He tries to use humor to cover for his emotions. He shrugs off concern, finding it easier to be on his own. He fears losing the people around him.
When he was two, his mother died. He lived with his father and grandparents. He was very close with his father, having a lot of hero worship for him. When he was seven, his father disappeared. He hasn’t been able to come to terms with that. The night he breaks into Encom, he "talks" to his father. He doesn't get the chance to have a full conversation, but he pauses after he has uploaded the new Encom software to the internet- making it free like his father had wanted. He asks his dad how he's doing, taking a moment to listen to the silence to wait for a reply that never comes.
In some ways, it is still 1989 for Sam. Many items he owns are tagged with the year's number. It's the year his father vanished. He hasn't been able to forget that time in his life. He has it on the inside of one of his "apartments'" garage doors, his helmet, and a few other items. In an easter egg on the blu-ray, there is a clip of him in 2010 crashing an Encom Press Conference, his parachute marked with 89 as he glides down over the crowd.
The night his father vanished, Sam had been promised a trip to the arcade the next day. He waited and waited. When his grandmother tried to convince him to eat, Sam stormed out and hopped on his bike. The movie segues to the current day, when Sam, now 27, is still running, hoping to find his father.
He hasn't given up hope of finding his father. Every year on the day of his father's disappearance, he performs a new stunt against Encom, his father's company, to try and gather attention to encourage people to look for his father.
Sam is a risk taker. He enjoys sky diving, parachuting off of buildings, and racing his motorcycle down freeways. He's also tech-savvy and intelligent. He breaks into a very secure office building, hacking into their systems to upload their newest software to the internet.
He has a lot of issues expressing his emotions. While I am taking him from earlier in the movie, later, when he meets up with his father, he doesn't hug his father. He doesn't really know what to say. Quorra watches him intently and he can't sort out his feelings, a single tear falling down his cheek.
He puts on airs of being cocky and collected. He acts very sure of himself and usually is a bit playful. When you see him interacting with the security guard and police, he pretends it's all a game. He shrugs a lot of things off.
His meeting with Alan in the beginning of the movie shows a lot of subtle indicators of Sam's personality. He tries to brush off Alan's concern, teasing Alan about their relationship moreso than exchanging pleasantries. When Alan begins to discuss the company, Sam acts like he really doesn't care. When Alan illustrates the ways he does, Sam ignores him, reading a magazine. However, his face belies his emotions. He's a little hurt that Alan doesn't think he can run the company. He's hurt and confused by the mention of his father.
On the outside, Sam presents a reckless, carefree persona. Most of the time, Sam hides beneath his boyish charm and reckless behavior. It's safer, easier. He has a history getting into trouble with the law and doesn't mind pulling dangerous stunts. He puts on a brave front, using humor to keep people at arm's length.
On the inside, he is still that young boy longing for his father. He has a lot of mixed emotions about his father's disappearance. He wants to be his father, but he isn't sure if he can live up to the memory. So instead, he hides from the world. He keeps to himself.
Most things in Sam's life can be traced back to his father's disappearance. He's unable to move forward and find any peace until he discovers what really happened to his father. And while he might entertain the idea that his father is chilling in Costa Rica (dead or alive), he can't really believe in it long term.
His life is dedicated to finding out more about what happened to his father. Every year on the anniversary of his father's disappearance he pulls one stunt or another on Encom to draw back attention to the situation. He isn't ready for people to forget his father and makes sure his hand is in the company enough to remind them of the principals his father stood for and, that somewhere out there, his father is waiting to be found.
He has a lot of heart and genuinely cares about people. He makes donations to charities and has a rescue dog. In the movie, there are ample instances of him being a very protective figure. He doesn't always think things out; he is inclined to just do. If he doesn't have a plan, he'll improvise. He'll go with what the situation hands him and figure a way out.
Part of this is from his love of extreme stunts. He carefully plans them out. There are a lot of factors he has to take into consideration so he's prepared when he puts himself in situations that call for some ingenuity and luck. He can be a man of action, hating the thought of sitting still for too long. He doesn't always think about the repercussions of his actions. He's faced jail and his bike being towed before. It's just another day in the life.
The canon point I'm taking him from has seen a development in personality from the reckless boy still searching for his father. He's still willing to take on the world, but he also has found things to fight for. He's found purpose. He's also just suffered a pretty devastating loss and is trying to come to terms with it.
