Oh c'mon Disney, what the hell is wrong with you?

The Hunchback of Notre Dame II? Cinderella II? The Little Mermaid 2? Cinderella IIII understand the need to feed the corporate behemoth, but you release so many new movie ideas. And I can understand Tarzan 2 (there's a lot of Tarzan novels) or Bambi 2 (as I actually read the book), but why do ( Read more... )

Movies need financing and financiers have been unwilling to finance movies based of new, untried ideas. So Hollywood has churned out remakes and sequels. And apparently Disney has now jumped into the same bandwagon, possibly for the same reasons.

Maybe it means their hegemony is slipping?

With Pixar under its belt, and the recent acquisition of Marvel, I don't see how they could be slipping.
Hopefully with the influx of stories from Marvel they'll focus the sequel-making to the more suited superhero franchises.

Nah, just haven't been keeping up with filmography. I recently stumbled upon a source of old Disney movies which also has newer ones, so I was perplexed by the amount of numbers in the titles.

All of that stopped a couple years ago when John Lasseter (former head of Pixar) took over creative development for Disney animation. Hence their recent rise in quality and the absence of any new DTV sequels.
