Hi Shruthi,

Thank you for the comment. I wrote the post two months ago and at that time I could get no joy out of Maboneng about the creches - It was not meant as a cricism of you but about the lack of info I received at that time from Maboneng when I made the call. Good luck with your work with a very deserving cause. Thanks

Truthful for some hard to swallow. This development is not at all inclusive, or had any local participation. Thank you for showing that. I have never been to Maboneng, but I always felt that it caters for people that want enjoy the ever evolving city without actually being involved in the real issues. Its a comfort of sorts.

Please keep them coming.

We need more voices like this to influence how this city develops. And ensure that the opinions of ALL people are taken into account.

But can we leverage what has been created at Maboneng to stimulate the local economy of Maboneng? To ensure that benefits do acrue to the people who live there, who have always lived there, the people the developers are "taking back the city" from?

Thank You Emily - To get the developers to buy into the need to educate those affected by gentrification seems to be a tough nut to crack.

You've cut straight to the tension in this piece. There are many examples of this in Joburg, and indeed around the world. I wish the conversations were more real, instead of middle class folk patting themselves on the back for "returning to the city". And yet, there must be a kind of urban regeneration that is legitimate and relevant; that truly brings people together. I guess we're still working on that in Joburg.

By the way, I'm really interested that you go on photo taking expeditions through the city. If I find myself living in Joburg again sometime in the near future, I'd love to meet up and go snapping with you. I take digital and film pics and love taking pics in the streets.
