As it turned out, the giant slug awoke from its slumber earlier that day, and burrowed through the earth, and started rampaging through the city in which Frederick lived.

The city was evacuated, all except for Frederick, who had fallen asleep at his desk.

When he was sent flying from the office building, he had been hit and trapped within a glob of slug slime, and thusly his ears where plugged, and his impact dampened.

He had been the only human who had faced the slug that day. The Army’s weapons only bounced off, had no effect, or merely stuck to it and thusly Frederick was the only one who saw the slug in its final moments. And so he became a hero.

Yes I did, because that would mean that the miliary had also seen the slug breath it's last breath. And then Frederick wouldn't be special.
