There's this really good book called Generation Me, where the author (whose name I don't remember) talks about American culture's and general individualism's obsession with high self esteem (in other words, feeling good about yourself even if you don't deserve to feel good about yourself) and how it's seriously damaging American society. It was really interesting to me, and not dry at all. Maybe you'd like it.
Now if only you could remember the title. :) But I was just reading about an article on how to acheive happiness (which was clearly a waste of time since I already knew the answers: sleep and eat. Lame). But the article mentioned that the search for happiness was like the 90's search for self- esteem and I have to agree that it's an obsession. If it's an actualy problem for the person then there'a a need to help... but most americans... well. Most people in Europe think taht AMerican's are more arrogant than the French, but arrogant in a stupid way as in, "AMerican't are arrogant but they have no reason to." Obviously this is not the case for everyone, but, it's an intreresting opinion. Sorry, sam, for ranting on your LJ comment section.
