A/N: Title comes from "A Charlie Brown Christmas."
When Karen gets home from work and finds Pam curled up on the couch watching A Charlie Brown Christmas, she knows it hasn’t been a good day. She frowns and sits on the couch.
Pam rests her head in Karen’s lap and puts her hand on her knee.
“So, Charlie Brown, huh?” Karen says and smoothes Pam’s hair.
“Yeah,” Pam sighs.
“What’s wrong?”
“I dropped out of my graphic design class,” Pam admits. “Basically, I’m a failure.”
“You’re not a failure,” Karen insists.
Pam sits up and rubs at her eyes. “Usually when someone is failing something, they’re a failure.”
“You were failing?” Karen asks softly.
Pam nods and hugs a throw pillow close to her chest. “My adviser said I should drop the course now and take it again next semester. Like I’ll be better at it next semester. Seriously, how many times can I screw this up?”
“Third time’s the charm,” Karen says. She offers a small smile and reaches out to pinch Pam’s cheek. “So graphic design isn’t your thing. So what? You like the rest of your classes, right? Just focus on that this semester and next semester we’ll get a bunch of graphic design books and we’ll get through it.”
Pam doesn’t reply. She frowns and her gaze drifts back to the television set: Charlie Brown and Linus are standing over the pathetic Christmas tree.
Karen thinks for a moment then disappears into the kitchen. After some searching, she returns to the living room carrying a half-empty bottle of apple-flavored vodka, a University of Connecticut shot glass, a coloring book and a small box of crayons. She sets everything on the coffee table carefully then sits on the floor and flips open the coloring book.
“I failed a class once,” Karen says as she pulls a purple crayon from the box. “Ethics. I hated Kant. And Mill. Mostly I hated the professor.”
She stops to pour herself a shot and downs it. “He couldn’t control the volume of his voice, which really made having a hangover in that class a real bitch.”
Pam smiles softly and slips onto the floor next to Karen. She pulls a red-orange crayon from the box and begins working on the page with Karen.
“You can’t be good at everything all the time,” Karen says. “All you can really do is do your best and kick ass at what you’re good at.”
“Thank you,” Pam says quietly and kisses Karen.
They take a few shots and color until Pam feels okay enough to turn off the television.
