A/N: Title comes from chapter one of "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte.

They’re spending the day in bed.

While Karen calls in sick to work and brushes her teeth, Pam sprawls out on the bed and sighs contentedly. She doesn’t have to phone anyone to lie about the flu or migraines or African sleeping sickness - she just doesn’t show up for class, and bully to whoever doesn’t like it. (She’ll panic around dinnertime when she realizes she hasn’t worked on any projects all day, but then Karen will kiss her neck and - oh, what was she worrying about again?)

Karen comes back into the room and flops gently on top of Pam. She grins and says, “They wish me a speedy recovery.”

Pam laughs and plays with Karen’s hair. “I bet they do.”

Karen rests her head on Pam’s chest, her head tucked neatly just below Pam’s chin. The soft sunlight filtering through the half-open blinds makes her feel groggy, so she closes her eyes and enjoys the moment.

Pam runs her index finger down Karen’s arm slowly then takes her hand in her own. She lays it flat on the bed and traces each finger purposefully. She asks quietly, “Did you ever play piano?”

“No,” Karen answers without stirring. “Why?”

“You’ve got piano-playing fingers,” Pam tells her. “Like Keira Knightley in that scene in Pride & Prejudice... only, like, healthy. I don’t feel like I need to feed you a sandwich when I see your fingers.”

Karen tilts her head just barely so that she can place a soft kiss on Pam’s clavicle. “This is why I don’t watch period drama with you any more.”

“Not even Jane Eyre?” Pam asks. “The BBC version?”

Karen captures Pam’s hand in her own and replies, “Yes, Jane Eyre. But only because Rochester is such a devilishly handsome bastard.”

“Well, now I don’t want to watch it with you,” Pam says, grinning. “All I’ll be able to think about is you fantasizing about Rochester.”

Karen lifts her head up and looks Pam in the eye. She presses her forehead against Pam’s and says softly, “Don’t be ridiculous.” She takes a long, dramatic pause. She smiles widely and finishes, “I’ll be fantasizing about Mrs. Fairfax - that saucy minx.”

Pam laughs and pushes Karen away playfully. “Jerk.”

Karen flops onto her back and stares at the ceiling, smiling. “What can I say? I love elderly nineteenth century widows. I think it’s the bonnets.”

Pam rolls over so that she’s laying on top of Karen. She brushes the hair from Karen’s face then narrows her eyes. “You’re lucky I love you.”

“I know I am,” Karen replies softly. She wraps her arms around Pam and kisses her. “I love you, too... even if you’re no Mrs. Fairfax.”

Pam can only laugh.

They don’t do much talking after that.
