Elena Gilbert's "CHOICE"... my speculations
I have this theory, I think that Elena's choice might NOT be Damon at the end of finale. Reasons for me thinking like this is because:
A) We are... in the course of this season, attuned to believe THIS idea that maybe D/E might finally come together by the end of this season.. and we ALL know how TVD and its writer's decides to screw with our thoughts and feelings.
B) She's 18.....young, vulnerable, not that mature, and naive... for her to love and understand Stefan's love and to be with it is totally understandable... and justifiable and in fact it's what is normal, because the way and the extent and depth with which Damon loves.... it is so devoting, intense, passionate and so GROWN UP... I can't think that being an 18 year old she would be able to understand or handle that kinda love. And she feels for Damon deeply... but the way he makes her feel... so many things ALL AT ONCE,.... its actually pretty amazing if you ask me... but ONLY if you understand it... then it'll be the BEST thing for you... if not then it'll be the WORST.. JUST LIKE ROSE SAID!,.... so for Elena to choose or love Damon back, would require her to understand his love first..... and I don't think she does..yet.
C) Somerhalder mentioned that there's a VERY IMPORTANT D/E scene in the finale which is "heartbreaking" for Damon, but in a way it is also "VERY LIBERATING".... and I think the ONLY heartbreaking Damon thing which might also liberate him is when Elena chooses, but not him... when she chooses Stefan.
I would LOVE her to choose Damon.... as I am a OBSESSED D/E fan. But I would also LOVE it if she chooses him because she is able to reciprocate with the same depth.... True Love, relationship is ALL about give and take.. you have to give to get it.. truly properly.. and I don't think Elena is in that place right now, where Damon is... I don't know... I just have a fleeting feeling in that way... I hope she chooses Damon though... and understands his love and loves him back equally.
AND THEN I SAW THIS:

I think it's gonna be Stefan she chooses.... because A) as we have seen in the webclips, it's Stefan who returns and hugs her and Damon is out showing Bonnie, Klaus's coffin storage place ... B) the description says .. at this point in her life, and like I said in my previous theory.... I think at this point in her life, it's gonna be Stefan...
*sigh*
BUT......... it could ALL go south and Elena could turn into a VAMPIRE.... hint: possible car crash as was shown in promo.... AND therefore that plan that Damon and Stefan had that they would be brother's again in 100 years, that could get really REALLY "F'ckd Up!"...
