The Year That Was (Musically Speaking)

Dec 16, 2008 10:59

If there's one thing I can say about my listening tastes in 2008, it's that it was dominated by energetic and/or happy music. I still appreciated my share of quieter music (Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes), but they just couldn't hold my attention for as long as those albums which had some life and spark to them. Maybe next year things will change.

interesting, interesting...
Some thoughts:

- I doubt it will ever be the year of the RAA because they look like people you've seen at a party and Crystal Castles has Alice Glass in a pencil skirt.

- It's good to know that I'm not the only one who didn't get For Emma Forever Ago.

- Did you listen to the second bonus disc/live concert of the BBC Sessions? Because that's really where B&S sound fantastic. Especially the Thin Lizzy cover, which is the missing link between old B&S and Dear Catastrophe Waitress/The Life Pursuit.

- I'm getting tired of the prevalence of compressed loudness in even so-called lo-fi indie artists' songs so much that I haven't listened to more than one song from many albums that are on the blogs' best-ofs. Everyone needs to stop doing that. I can turn the volume up, it's ok...

- I recommend Katie Stelmanis' covers over her original songs (but they'll probably show up on my list, so you can hear them then.)

- No Gn'R? Just kidding...

The girl in the RAA is pretty cute, though!

The live concert is fantastic. I'm always worried people on the bus think I'm listening to Thin Lizzy. I've definitely removed the "old sad bastard music" label off them.

Is the loudness in regards to Times New Viking? Because I found that album to be really bad and never listened to it all the way through.

Also, add Hercules and Love Affair to my list of overrateds.

what's to worry about people thinking you're listening to Thin Lizzy?
B&S also covered Whiskey In The Jar on an EP. Rreally great.
The loudness comment is directed at everyone. Everyone! Even Basia...

My vote for overrated is MGMT, with the exception of the synth line in "Kids".
